| You are not damn right | How to transfer from one HD to another On different computers? Basically I want to get my data off this computer, and put it on my new computer. I won't have two monitors or anything. I know it's possible, I just don't know how to go about it.

| are you transfering files or programs ? if programs, just reinstall the software... if files, just grab a 512 meg/gig usb flash drive and copy it all over.. or do it over the network.. OR open case-old computer, remove hdd from old computer open new computer case, install old hdd to new computer boot system copy files. turn system off remove old hdd put back in old case done or buy a hard drive enclosure and use that. |

+2 Internets | I'll call the computer you want to copy the data from the source computer, and the computer you want to copy to the destination folder. I'm assuming both are running some form of Windows. I've never used Vista so I'm assuming it's the same on that as it is on XP/Win98. Both PCs need to be booted up and connected together. Connecting both thru a multiport router is the easiest way. If you don't have one a crossover Ethernet cable will also work, connect one end to 1 computer and the other to the other. First, you need to enable file sharing on the source computer. Bringing up Help and searching for File Sharing will help you do this. Now you need to share the folders you want to copy over. Right click on the folders and select Sharing, Share this folder. Share all the folders you want to copy over. Now on the destination computer under My Network Places, Entire Network you should see the source computer. Double clicking on that should show all the shared folders. You can now copy them over to the destination computer. |

| They also have to have unique computer names and be in the same workgroup and tcp/ip subnet (simple if you have a cable router and are already using DHCP, otherwise just make one 192.168.1.2 and the other 192.168.1.3, with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 on each) Workgroup and computer name is in System control panel under Computer Name tab. TCP/IP settings are in Network Connections -> Local Area Connection -> Properties button -> double-click TCP/IP in the listbox. Close everything and reboot both machines after making changes. |

+6 Internets | Is there a way to copy the entire HD, programs, OS and all? I've been curious about this, since my hard drive is ancient and probably one reason my computer is not as fast as it could be, and I don't have XP disks anymore. |

| Another idea is upload all your data to a netfirms account, only $10 for a year and I think you get 20GB of storage with a ton of bandwith. This way it is protected too in case of a emergency (fire, HDD crash, etc.). Netfirms, Free Web Hosting, Domain Names for Small Business is the link and make sure you use the promo code or it will cost a lot more. |
