RIP Barbaro =(

Barbaro was euthanized yesterday. I try not to have a personal attachment to racehorses - but this guy was something special.

If anyone doesn't remember, he's the racehorse who broke down in the Kentucky Derby last year. He was undefeated previously and was the favorite to win. He was incredible to watch when he was running. He did go through 8 months of surgeries and healing to try to fix it - brings up the question of "just because you can, does it mean you should?" Anyway, just dorking out for a second here to wish him peace. He was an amazing horse.

It's pretty sad but at the same time, it was almost inevitable that it was going to come to this. Horses just don't recover from injuries that severe.

I'm so glad the media will stop talking about this horse now.

The owners next time will probably save themselves half a million in keeping a horse alive for 6 months that will never race again and just put it down immediatly after.

I wonder how many gallons of sperm they milked him for in the mean time, though?

Enough to justify the vet bills, I'm sure.

I'm not sure how expensive race horse stud fees are, but I know in the dressage world, even mediocre horses can get 500$ a vial.

Hopefully his death helps with keeping the price of glue reasonable.

There was a story about the biggest race stud on Real Sports. I can't remember the name, but it was $250,000 for every colt sired.

* Oops, I was way off on the price.

So hey, they cloned that sheep Dolly in the 90's.... they spend THOUSANDS on thoroughbred sperm as it is, how much would it cost to clone this horse?

As I've read, the thoroughbred racing community spends MILLIONS on their meticulous breeding programs right? Why bother breeding when you can just clone Secretariat? I'm sure there are good reasons, but cloning secretariat can't be much more expensive than the breeding and maintenance costs.

Is there a law or a league ruling against cloning the horses?

Zero. The Jockey Club (the registration for Thoroughbreds) does not allow any sort of artificial insemination or embryo transfer. Only live cover (meaning stallion actually has to physically mount the mare).

So yeah - the ultimate goal wasn't to get the horse to race again. It was to make millions and millions off of his offspring. And yes, I agree..it probably should have been done months ago. But I'm a horse lover...I can't help but to feel sad =(
