Giuliani can't win, because he can't win the South. He supports gun control and abortion. Around here we call folks that do that "liberals."

Voting really has nothing to do with motivating people to vote. People who won't go out and vote aren't going to suddenly head to the ballot box because a candidate looks a certain way or makes certain promises.
I'm registering to vote so that I can vote for Obama. I know a few others who were so disgusted with the choices that they didn't vote the last two elections either. They'll be registering to vote for Obama as well. Never doubt Charisma and Change.

Honestly, whatever it takes to get the Bill Clinton talking head character back on Conan O'Brien is fine by me.

That Newsweek article briefly mentioned the other reason why Hillary will never be President, her husband. There are not enough (if any) right-wing voters to swing and vote for any Clinton to make up for the number of left-wingers who simply will never vote for a woman. Condi Rice has a better chance at becomming President than Hillary.

If we're going to see either Hillary or Obama win the Democratic nomination, I would have to think Obama has the best chance to actually win. I just don't think the fact that he's black matters all that much to most voters ### (read: 'voters', not hillbilly trailerpark yokels). His politics will matter more than anything. I don't much care about the whole woman/black thing, but I have friends and family who have no qualms about saying openly, "I will never vote for a woman." I don't know anyone who will openly say, "I will never vote for a black person." Maybe they keep that private. But call it a gut feeling on my part, I just don't think the fact he's black matters to most people, at least not in the way it matters that Hillary is a woman (not to mention a Clinton).

I'm with Vorph, I'll likely vote Libertarian again ever since I learned that McCain supports creationism in public schools. I liked McCain until that. Even voted for him in the 2000 primaries.

Anyway, the Dems are fucked. The RNC will push Obama's middle name so far down Johnny Flagwaver's throat that he doesn't have any realistic chance, Hillary is a woman and a Clinton to boot, and as Khorum said, the left wing is still subdivided. (Although this cycle may see a subdivision of the right, with the "not a jesus freak" right wingers balking at the RNC. But then again, maybe not)

### Should add, "white" voters. The fact that he's black will likely matter immensely to black voters. So long as people like Jackson, Nagin and Sharpton are still considered "black leaders", you could put Tookie up for election and people would vote simply for the color of his skin. Which is all very sad imo. But anyway...

Sadly, I think you're right. This country will elect pretty much anyone of any race, color, religion, etc. before they'll elect a woman. That whole "Durrr, what if she gets her period when she has to make important decisions?!?!11" mindset will never go away.

Not that I like Hillary Clinton, or even think she's the right woman for the job, mind you. It's just that any woman in her shoes would have a snowball's chance in hell.

I agree to a certain extent, but I have to wonder: would the kind of person dissuaded by the whole "Hussein" thing really have voted for Obama in the first place? The only people redneck enough to be lured into the whole "Obama is a terrorist" mentality would be voting Republican even if Ronald Reagan's ghost emerged from the dead and ran as a Democrat.

The real question is: will swing voters, and perhaps even some left-wingers, be swayed by such tactics?

Another random, silly question: would having a president named Barack Hussein Obama give us some "street cred" in the Middle East? Seriously, though: won't those nutjobs in Iran or Lebanon or Syria be more willing to negotiate with someone whose name sounds a bit more familiar to them? I'm only half kidding here; I kind of think the "Hussein" thing could be an unexpected benefit for Barack.

A month or so ago I heard Dick Morris say that Hillary was going to be the next POTUS.

He also said that after she won he was moving to Peru (or somewhere), because there's no way he wants to live in a country in which Hillary is in charge of the CIA, FBI, IRS, NSA, etc.

Which, to me, is a damn scary thought.

Try being a liberal under GW. Same deal.

I want to scream Reznor's song:

"...(now you know)....THIS IS WHAT IS FEELS LIKE!"

Being anything under GW is a scary thought. My cat could do a better job running this country. He's smarter, more worldly, and a more shrewd negotiator of global politics.

Ok, I'm curious, do you think this guy is somehow gonna get a pass with a name like that? Nevermind that he's black and that his inauguration will likely see the secession of half the states of the union, we haven't BEGUN to see the Rove machine demolish this person's character. Yeah, it IS a BFD man, the cretins will CRUCIFY Obama on that name, everyone between Clinton's organization to the RNC will take turns shitting on him and his family.

Mark my words, before November 2008 we will know intimate details about his father's Sharia-based Kenyan constitution, the madrasas he attended in Indonesia, and lurid details about his sudden discovery of Christianity. He won't have my congressman steering him through THAT minefield either, as Rahm Emmanuel is sticking to a neutral post-primary DNC strategy.
