Got my new desktop, now I have a problem

It won't connect to the internet. When I plug the ethernet cable in to my laptop it works fine, when I plug it into the desktop it spends some time on acquiring a network address, and then after that I get the warning that there is limited to no activity. I tried reinstalling windows and the ethernet driver, but no work. The light is on, but I have had no luck. I did manage to get an IP address, but I couldn't ping any websites. It is an on-board network card, could it be a mobo problem? Could I try installing a new network card?

I have dual ethernet on my pc and one works and the other dosnt. Basically the same thing happens to me that is happening to you. Ive chalked it up to the drivers.

But eh Ive never really investigated the problem

So you never did anything to the problem? My desktop has wifi, if that helps explain anything.

Have you disabled all of windows firewall and ensured all of your network settings are correct?

Also, the IP address that it acquired... did it start with 169...?

Well, several times it gave the default ip, but no, one time it got a real ip address. And I did disable all windows firewalls, to no avail.

Whats your network look like? Do you have a direct connection to the modem? Or do you have a router connected to the modem? Did the IP you were getting start with 169.254.x.x (bad IP)? The on board Ethernet is definitely checked on in the BIOS? Drivers from the motherboard are all installed?

Try the following if you are directly connected to your modem. Shut the modem off and wait a minute. On your computer open up the command line and release your IP info (ipconfig /release). Turn the modem back on. See if you get an IP

If you have a router or switch, remove it from the equation and try hooking the desktop up to the modem and repeat above instructions.

If you still aren't getting an IP, try installing the new NIC card and see if you get anything.

Thanks for the tips, I shall try them out. I am going to cop a new network card on my way home from school, then I am going to check the bios.

Is it a good idea to consider just sending it back even if the new card works? Did I get a lemon?

have you tried power cycling (unplugging the power) your modem/router?
