I think I'd rather have a habanero q-tip shoved up my penis than buy a mac.

Hahaha. A+

I'm curious though how many people outside of Tejas, Mexifornia know what a habanero is though.

My Dell laptop is 4 months old now, and it has served me perfectly.

I'm no Dell lover, but bang for your buck they are pretty much the top for mid-range laptops right now, or so it seems.

Also, from reading threads like this and internet reviews, it seems about that about 90% people have no complaints. The other 10% is mostly Millie, who must have extremely bad luck.

I've been quite happy with my Dell Inspiron 9300 in the two years that I've owned it. (1.8ghz centrino, 1GB ram, 6800Go vid card /w 256mb). Very nice widescreen display. Runs WoW, Battlefield 2 etc with no problems at all.

I reinstalled windows when I got it (just to get rid of McAfee and all the limited-time crap that comes with it) but it's been troublefree ever since, eventhough it was x-rayed on a daily basis for a few months.

Regardless of what you buy, I would always invest in a proper, padded laptop case/bag (the form-fitted Dell one was about $45). Your laptop will be much better protected against shock and damage than it would be if you just stuck it in a backpack. Sooner or later you WILL drop it or hit it against something.

Dell is hit or miss...I have 5 Dell Inspriron 3800's that are in my domain at work. All are used by field techs during installations for testing etc. They all work fine and are like 5 years old. Its like the dam things just refuse to break. The only problem I had with one is when a tech dropped one off a roof and it became impaled lol, but that's hardly a Dell issue.

That said I also have had 2 Dell laptops out of the 15 I have bought in the last 18 months crap out. One the HDD gave up the ghost after about 6 months the other was just fucked up it would randomly reboot, lose BIOS settings forget it had hardware installed but nothing I could diagnose as nothing was reproducable...that was a bitch to get RMA'd too.

On the other hand I got my wife a 17" widescreen Toshiba P105 about 3 months back and that thing is great with the sole exception of having to buy a super large case to fit the thing in. Battery life is only fair though.

On a semi-related topic, why is it so hard to find a 14" laptop with a decent graphics card? I'd like to play games on it, but I don't want to go with a 15.4" or larger (again). I have a 15.4" Dell Inspiron 8600 (which has worked great for over 3 years--sorry, Millie), and 15.4" is just a bit too big for portability.

I wouldn't feel to bad, according to the lawsuit against them Dell's laptops have a 30% failure rate and that is only for the last few years (steadily getting worse though). So a lot of people have good ones. Millie's odds of five duds aren't unbelievable though, especially if it was caused by one particular batch of bad MBs.
