Ya, you can basically take whatever force necessary to restrain the guy until the fuzz shows up. This obviously does not include breaking bones and shit. Grab a bondage kit from a local sex shop to make things more interesting. Don't forget the camera.

Had this same problem where I live, in Apartment Lofts in downtown Knoxville. The lofts are pretty nice, but there's a soup kitchen around the corner so there's bums and addicts aplenty. I wasn't exactly sure what to do either, but my roommates filed 4-5 police reports each (1 for every time it happened over a 2 month period), and eventually they posted up a police car on the corner as well as one in our exposed, non-gated parking lot. That seemed to help a bit, but the shit still happens from time to time.. We've eliminated most of the break in's by having nothing of value visible in the car. Plus, one of my roommates managed to scare the living fuck out of a group of bums whilst walking through the lot, and things have gotten better since then. You could always take a couple nights a week, lay in the back floorboard of your car with a baseball bat/tazer/mace and wait for something to happen, then clock the fucker. But I could see that backfiring if the perpetrator had a gun.

Just do what we do here in texas. Be the man with the gun in the first place. Blam blam "Oh police, i thought he was going to attack me~" You of course, need to skip the camera in this instance, and make sure you say something to get their attention first. Bullets into the back are a giveaway.
