As long as they let policy be dictated by demonstrating students they're fucked anyway. The riots last year were caused by a law that would actually have made it easier for young people to get employed... either they didn't understand that or they figured an employer being able to fire them for sucking was inacceptable.

It's France. They aren't allowed firing people. Since when have you expected them to do anything since that makes any sense?

The riots were the result of a deeper social unrest. The problem is that the youth have no say in government.

Bad government, evil democracy or lack of appealing young people running for an elected office?

Actually, I forsee a very bad future for France if things don't change dramatically: lowest work hours, earliest retirement and toughest employment regulations in Europe - not exactly great for the economy...

Specifically zeroing in on the hosiptality industry here as relates to the article...what's going to happen is the businesses are not going to want to pay OT hours. They will want to cut back the existing hours of employees so they do not get OT and hire others to fill in the "lost" hours. So existing employees may see a reduction in their income.

However this assumes there is a readily available pool of labor from which to draw new employees. If, as the article states, there is a shortage of labor willing to do those jobs for the current wages then the owners will have to either pay OT to existing employees or have a higher base pay with which to entice people from the limited labor pool.

So what's better OT or higher base pay? I don't know I am not an economist but i see the price of a cup of coffee getting much higher real quick in France.

And I was hoping to visit there in the next 2-3 years =/

Or they can figure out which four hours of the week they have the least business and then not be open during those hours. Cost of printing a sign to say "Thursdays closed between 1:15-3:15" isn't that expensive. Should be fun for the employees who get a two hour break twice a week for no particular reason.

There were large demonstrations and protests too though, just no burning cars

Socialism - like anything - just depends on the degree in which it's implemented.

Socialism doesnt work period. In the end all it does is show people that apathy pays off. Why should I strive to get a good job when daddy .gov will give me healthcare and a college education?

And fuck France, bunch of little bitches. What the fuck is a 35 hour work week? Are they allergic or afraid of hard days worth of work?

Because you can still get fired and flunk out? I'm not sure. Capitalism is just as bad - did you know in Ohio they're going to exploit gamblers to pay for everyone's college education (yet again, lottery 2.0).

So what's better? Money set aside for people to go to school, or money earned from people who can't really afford it, for people to go to school?

Isn't Capitalism grand.

Hahahahahaha

Did you know in Florida they are going to exploit thrill-seekers--by opening more amusement parks--to pay for everyone's college education?
