| AMD x2 chips worth buying still? I was lookin at some prices on newegg for the 4200 dual core processor. I'm still running a 3700 single core but I've been thinking about upgrading. I prefer to run AMD chips over intel and my current mobo supports 939 pin chips. I would swap to an intel chip if the price/performance was really sweet but I haven't kept up w/ how the amd/intel war has progressed in the last few months since the conroe was introduced. So back to my original question... What processors are hot for the money if I want to stay w/ my 939 pin mobo or if I do upgrade mobo should I look at the am2 supported mobos or???? As for price range I'm only looking to spend a few hundred. I'd like to stay under $300 tops for a core upgrade like this. If I replace my current chip and mobo I'll probably put them in my 2nd comp and get the 3rd running off the other chip/mobo. Since I'm asking, what vid cards are good for power/price combo? Last I bought was a 7800GT for $400 a good while ago. I typically spend more on vid cards.

| Core 2 Duo motherboards are still expensive though. The lowest price one I'd actually consider using is about $175 (DFI Infinity 975X) and the ideal one is about $260 (Asus P5W-DH Deluxe). The cpus run from $183 (E6300) to $315 (E6600) at newegg. I will say that unless you really need the dual core, even an upgrade from 3700 to X2-4800 is not going to be a massive one, especially in games. So you might be better off waiting until you are ready to buy a motherboard/cpu combo instead. As for video cards, wait for the G80 or R600 series boards to arrive. The G80 should be out first but I wouldn't jump on them immediately, at least not until there's some comparison benchmarks between the two available. I still think ATI will take round 1 of the DX10 hardware battle. If you absolutely have to have a video card now, look at the 7900GTO and X1900XTX. |

| Id wait on buying a new computer til DDR3 Core Duo Mobos are out. And as Vorph said, wait for the new DX10 cards to come out aswell. I think the new G8000 series is supposed to be released next month, and I would assume not long after the R600 series from ATI.

| Might want to get a quadcore along with a dx10 card. The hottest things to come out in the next 2 months. Depends really on the applications you use if its worth to upgrade from a 3700 to a x2, since amd prices dropped drastically it might be a good option until the quadcore gets a lil cheaper. | The only thing intensive I do on my pc is game but I do multibox in eq still. I noticed w/ the new xpac 3 windows lags me pretty good. I dunno if it's something particular in my machine causing the issue or just the new graphics and whatnot. It's been acting a touch funny, my guess is hd atm. I thought a dual core processor might help w/ boxing. It's always low on ram so I picked up an extra 2 gigs to go w/ the 2 I already have.

| XP will get DX9L i believe which will be the dx10 equivalent for XP. and cathan, the 7900GTO is a steal right now. its a 250 card or so and is just a underclocked GTX, clock it up and youll get one ehll of a card. also might wanna go to ATI route with a x1900xt or xtx for around 300 get a 4200 or 4400 and it should haul you over another year... OC it and youll get some killer performance... Mwave also has a opty 165 for uh 149ish which is great deal... check Anandtech hot deals for other hotdeals on major retailers for computer parts as well |

| No, that DX9L is meant for Vista only. DX10 will never come to XP, as its Vista's main selling point.
