my shoes stink something fierce

alright, i work out 7 days a week right now for about 3 hours a day which inludes a 3 to 3.5 mile run. now, i obviously have a second pair of shoes just for working out but these things stink and i mean BAD. i sweat a lot and these get saturated and you can smell them from 10 feet away.

does anyone have a good solution to this? i figure anyone who does or has played a serious sport probably had similar problems with pads or footwear. any tips?

i have tried febreeze (works for about 2 minutes) and odor eaters spray shit which smells like ass itself... no luck though. at best they smell fine for a few minutes and the shoes overpower the anti stink repellent. they are currently locked in my closet.

How old are these shoes? If they are more than 2-3 months old then doing 20ish miles a week would have them nearly spent. In short, buy a new pair of shoes. Your feet (and everybody around you apparently) will thank you.

I've played hockey since I was 5. I sweat profusely when doing any sort of physical exertion. Not cause I'm out of shape or anything, that's just how my body works (I'm typically too warm all the time, that sort of thing).

I basically gave up trying to minimize the stench, mold/stains and all the lovely shit that goes with it. Instead I just replace my equipment as often as I feel necessary, and don't really bother wearing shirts/undies underneath my equipment, since there isn't a material known to man that can "wick" away moisture fast enough.

Of course, the life is significantly extended if you let shit dry out between uses. I still can't understand guys who throw their smelly equipment back in their bag, and then toss the bag into the back of their pickup and let it fester until the next game (and in the winter, it just freezes, leaving you with cold, wet, disgusting equipment).

Shoes in general take 24 hours to dry and should always be allowed to dry completely to increase life-span and minimize odor. Get two pairs of shoes and alternate from one day to the next.

have two pairs, i'll start rotating but even the other pair that i haven't worn in the past several weeks still stinks from before, just not nearly as bad. i'm also one of those guys that sweats a lot when i'm working hard and i am too hot a lot of the time, must be metabolism. i'm still hoping i can find some sort of antibacterial spray for these suckers because i'm fairly sure all body related odor is due to bacteria and the fact that these shoes never get a chance to fully dry probably exacerbates the problem.

I find a dryer sheet or 2 inside the shoe absorbs a bit of the sweat and leaves behind that dryer fresh smell.

Stop working out, the smell is God saying "you ain't gettin pussy no matter what you do."

Seriously though, if you work out 7 days a week get two pairs of athletic shoes and alternate every day. When you are done with one pair make the laces loose, pull the tongue forward. Do everything you can to get as much surface exposure to air as you can and let them get good and dry. Hang them up outside in the fresh air if dry and able.

Also it is a good idea to wash your feet and change your socks BEFORE working out. Not saying an entire shower but at least give your feet a good rub down with hot water and a wash cloth then dry them and add some baby powder.

Your current pair is so bacteria laden and fetid it is probably beyond the point of repair. Might wanna buy a couple little cloth baggies of cedar and put them in your shoes. That tends to help as well.

who knows this might be bad for your shoes, but I just throw em in the washing machine w/ some bleach and dry em out later. Typically takes 90% of the stench away and alternate shoes too.

Offtopic, but what was the name of your other account on FoH, bcware? It's eluding me at the moment. Did it start with an 'r'?

Out of curiosity, what is your reasoning for a workout schedule this demanding? i rowed crew in 9th and 10th grades and we practiced 3-4 hours 6 days week and it was hell, when i got home at night i was unable of doing a thing except for falling asleep on the couch. i don't mean to come off as condescending but your body needs time to repair itself just as much as it needs exercise so i'm assuming you're training for some sport or event?

Put them in the washing machine. Then let them air dry.

And regarding your workout schedule. Working out 7 days a week is not a good idea. Your body has to have time to repair itself. Even professional athletes don't exercise 7 days a week. The most elite of our special forces don't exercise 7 days a week.

And for the odd case, even if they did, 1 - 2 of those days would not be at full intensity.

Couple things you can try. When I played football I had the same problem with my cleats. What I did was take the laces out, pull the tounge all the way back and out so there was a good bit of room for air to circulate. I took and got a hairspray bottle filled with with 90% rubbing alcohol and spritzed a few good squirts in there.

Then I went and got one of those little cyclone fans that are about 12 inches around and stuck the shoes right in front of it with it on full blast. Once its totally dry I would put Dr. Schoals foot power in there and that pretty much regulated the smell.

The alcohol helped prevent the formation of mold and it evaporates very quickly under the fan so you can't really hurt anything by spraying it in there but you have to do this on a new pair of shoes from the get go if you let the smell get entrenched they are ruined.

yeah the body gets its rest when it sleeps for a good 8 hours straight, when you're used to working out 7 days a week you don't need as much downtime.

you can't just start working out lifting double weight everywhere 7 days a week, you'll kill yourself.

Just because you can condition yourself so that you are able to exercise 7 days per week doesn't mean that you should. 8 hours of sleep per night is not sufficient to fully repair the muscle and joint damage you cause while exercising along with the other general repair work that your body performs while you are sleeping.

You really should have at least one day per week where you take a break.
