+37 Internets | In December, I will finally put together the computer I've always wanted. It will be excessive and a complete misappropriation of funds (go go bonus check), but...m'eh. I've always wanted something "cutting edge;" even if it is for only two months or so before something better comes out. So, I want to spend no more than $7000 for a desktop. This is to include appropriate software, speakers, monitor, keyboard, backup, etc, but not mouse (laser mouse <3). My friend was saying that even having two video cards is not enough to push some of the larger monitors out there (truth?). Dunno; all I know is I want something big and widescreen. Anyone help me out? When it is finished, I'll post what was purchased, and the final product.

+37 Internets | Should I go pre-packaged, or purchase all the parts separate and put them together? My friend always said Alienware, while good, was waaay overpriced.

+1 Internets | If you're spending 7000 dollars anyway, why not make sure you're going to be getting a long term warranty just to make sure if your mobo fries along with everything else in it you're covered? I understand piecemealing a ghetto computer together through newegg or something. If your 85 dollar mobo blows up, who gives a shit? Buy a new one. If you're going top of the line and that mobo costs 200 dollars alone, wouldnt it make sense to have a warranty to back that up? And no, you cannot get a 7000 dollar computer for 4500 dollars. Go make one up (without using CRAP components) and you'll see thats impossible. If you want a top of the line computer you'll have to spend top of the line money. |

+1 Internets | If you want think of it this way. You're going to buy a new car. Is it smarter to buy a new car from a dealership with a 30,000 mile warranty, or buy a car with 150 miles on it with no warranty for 5% cheaper. Just the piece of mind you'll have alone is worth it. Newegg = Used Car Alienware = New Car with warranty. |

+3 Internets | I would wait till november to buy this PC. Thats when the DX10 cards come out, which will last you ALOT longer then anything out right now. If your impatient and buy now, you really will be outgunned in 1 month. |

+1 Internets | most (perhaps all?) of the parts i've bought from newegg have been under warranty, and if there is a defect you can RMA and just get another. shit my evga graphics card was lifetime warranty.

I completely agree with going the newegg route if you're spending 2000 dollars, but if you're buying a supercomputer, I'd want the fucking whole deal. | |

I personally built my own machine a month or two back when the Conroe came out... for ~1800. If I was to be spending that much... I don't think I would have built it on my own...too much money to take risks... even if its going to cost you ~1000 more in the long run. The peace of mind is worth it. Personally, I had to fucking RMA my Corsair XMS ram THREE FUCKING TIMES, before I got sticks which I could run at the adverstised speed of 5-5-5-12 without having errors. Corsair XMS ram fucking blows, get another companies... if you end up building on your own. Tested, my ass.

| You know, actually I was wrong. I just built that entire computer, exactly (the EXACT name brand and part on the Alienware build) to Alienwares specifications, minus the exact monitor which New Egg did not have (I purchased one with exact specifications as the monitor Alienware listed), and I built it for less than $4,000. Given, most people who buy from New Egg tend to have a general knowledge of computer hardware. If something of mine acts up, i'll fix it, or buy a replacement at a cheap rate. It's hardly what i'd call a 'ghetto computer'. I've not to have a single problem with it yet. Not a one. I've had more problems with a factory made computer in a month that i've had with mine in over a year, and that's fact. If you are cool with 40% of the money you throw down on the Alienware being for a warranty, then go for it bud. I'm not the kind of guy who can pay $3,000 for a simple "in case it breaks" factor on a $4,000 computer, and can still sleep at night. If you really have the cash though, do what you want. |
