Tech Q - Slow cable

Hey guys -

Fishing for ideas.

My cable internet on my desktop is sucken. My speed on http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ is about 2800... just had the comcast guy over and he messed with a couple things, and we deturmined the problem was the computer. Speed on my laptop, and his, was around 10k.

I've put latest drivers on my ethernet card, and had Mr Mcafee make sure my shit was clean. Still not getting the speeds.

When testing the laptops the exact same modem/cable was used... I just can't figure it out. I'm going to go buy a new ethernet card but figured I'd see if anyone had any ideas first.

Windows Key + R... type in Msconfig... go to services tab and hide all non-microsoft, then disable all of those, and then go under startup and disable all of the ones that are for stuff other than windows

Thanks - tried that and restarted. Unfortuantly it didn't work. Still getting around 2800.

Any other ideas?

I'd just say fuck it.

10 dollar NIC and you've eliminated the single likeliest cause.

How old is this computer anyway; some computers in our cisco lab would only pull down 2mbs instead of 10.

Bout 4 years... any recommendations on a new nic or does it matter?

Was the cause of the suck downloads on the old computers the NIC or just some other random sucky component?

Thanks

The NIC was only rated for 2 mpbs, it was some archaic technology from the dawn of time. I remember thinking, well when would you normally ever use 2 mpbs

Before you replace your NIC you could try:

Have no apps open and...
start>run>cmd>netstat -b
If it displays lots of info you probably have spyware. If not type:
netsh i i r r + hit enter>netsh w r (screw mcafee firewall) +hit enter and reboot.

I did this:

start>run>cmd>netstat -b

4 things popped up - one of em being steam. I'm assuming that's a small amount.

Tried that second thing but couldn't really follow your instructions. Do I do netsh in cmd, or in run?

Thx for help.

BTW - this is my NIC:

netsh i i r r - basically resets your tcp/ip stack back to defaults
netsh w r - you may not want to do this, it will rip your mcafee firewall up...could reinstall mcafee after. If you're behind a router than it's not a big deal.

edit:if you just do iirr it has no output and you still have to reboot.
