Computer trouble

So heres the deal.. I got my computer and it seems to run pretty good, although maybe not as good as it could be. The computer simply can not finish a 3D Mark 06 test as it always simply just shuts off during the CPU benchmark phase leading me to think its my CPU. Also, my girlfriend kept calling and complaining to me last night as I was working that it had shut down on her a few times while she was playing World of Warcraft, and once like a week ago while she was browsing the internet.

So here is the specs

Pentium D 3.0Ghz Dual-Core cpu
2048MB DDR PC3200 RAM
250GB 7200rpm HDD
Nvidia 7800gtx 256MB video card

She told me after the computer turned off the gpu was at 73 degrees celsius(sp?).

So, what could the problem possibly be, and what are my solutions? I hate to take it cause I use this thing on a daily basis for work.

It sounds like a memory issue. If you haven't already, clearing the cmos and loading the bios defaults could fix the problem if you have your memory timings set too agressively. Often when you buy 2 x 1gb sticks (assume this is what you have) the manufacturers, in my opinion, do not tell the truth about the stable memory timings. Sure you may be able to boot with 2-3-2-6 1T command rate, but you'll find it is only truly stable at 3-3-3-6 1T command rate or something similar, maybe 2.5-3-2-6 IT or maybe 2-3-2-6 2T. Memory manufacturers are often the suck.

If your ram is faulty, try running memtest86 http://www.memtest.org/, if you want more help, you need to provide much more specific settings...type of motherboard, type of ram, slated timings, etc.

Why would the RAM consistantly cause my computer to crash during the CPU benchmark portion of the 3dMark06 test, but not during the video card benchmarking?

Yeah i fail to see how the RAM can cause CPU overheat.

um what the fuck are you talking about? if it says 2-3-2-5 it means it is STABLE at that setting... the ram should be able to run that and if doesn't, its manufacturer's fault and you can either RMA or go back to the store you bought it from and exchange it

do you mean CPU or GPU running at 73C? GPU at 73 degrees is totally fine...if its CPU then its too hot...if its a ram problem...you will get a blue screen of death, so if it just shuts down it could be cpu running too hot since you are using intel...are you using STOCK heatsink? if you are, that can be the problem...the P4s runs extremely hot and the heatsink intel provides is a piece of shit

anyway, go google "prime95" and download the program... it taxes your system at 100% and its used for system stablility by overclockers... run the program and see if your computer is running too hot... from your description, your CPU is running too hot

Also its not a pentium 4.. its a penitum D 3.0GHZ dual-core. I bought the computer from Fry's Electronics and video card seperate, and had them put the two together for me (even though installing video cards are easy, I figured this way they can't blame me for bad installation). No blue screens of death - ever. Just computer shuts completely down. Always during the 3d Mark 06 test (it has never finished it) and sometimes while playing games, and once when my girlfriend was browsing webpages or so she says.

go to www.serialz.to or www.9down.com to get a crack CD key so you can customize your 3dmark06
turn off cpumark and run the test
is 73C load or idle? (most likely load just making sure)
and yes you NEED to buy a better hsf...your P-D is a prescott so it runs HOT .. your case might not have enough air flow for the crappy intel stock hsf to cool your cpu down
anyway just run prime 95 and see if the cpu is overheating..you should run it at 15-20 minutes to see if your CPU is overheating
since your cpu is dual core go to http://www.dfi-street.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16446 to set up dual p95

anyway good luck

thanks for the input.. I really appreciate the help, I will do those steps later tonight after I am done working tonight. the 73 was just after a load.. computer turned off, so I had my girlfriend turn it back on and check the temp. before it could drop and she told me it was at 73 and slowly going down.
