Hardware help...

My motherboard is fried, and shorted out my PS. I ordered a new PS, knowing that I would need one for any route I went but I am still stuck on ordering a new mobo and these are my reasons.

I have currently

- p4 3.0ghz northwood cpu(ht)
- ATI X800XL AGP <- wish mobo blew back when i bought a new vid card
- 2 512 sticks for corsair ram
- couple HD's
- etc etc

Now my question is, do I bite the bullet right now and buy a mobo that can support PCI Express? If so, do I want to also upgrade my processor? I know it depends on how much money I can throw at this....just say $ isn't an issue. The issue is I do not want perfectly good parts laying around doing nothing except for collecting dust.

I had an ASUS P4P800SE mobo. Should I look into something else if I am not going to upgrade to PCI express or to another chipset. Any input would be appreciated...I just can't pull the trigger either way so my desktop is sitting there all torn apart.

Vons

Edit: I need a new case....but one without a PS since I already have one....any input on this would be sweet to. Thanks in advance!

I would test out the cpu before making any decisions.

Honestly imo, i would have waited to get a complete picture of what to order, that not being the case..........

would be my suggestions.

First off thank you for the help! What do you mean getting the complete picture of what to order?

If you mean by having all these spare parts.....what I meant was that the mobo shorted out and killed my Power Supply. The case that I have is still usable, but the front hinging panel is shot. I knew that if I was going to use the case anyways I'd need a power supply either way.

So you think I should get a PCI express board, and purchase a PCI Express video card? The question is what do I do with a perfectly good AGP card. All input is appreciated!

Also, testing out this CPU, how would one go about this if they don't have a mobo to test it on( I don't have any spares ).

If you have a friend with the same chipset as you that would work, just swap them out. Not the case ? I would try Fry's or Best Buy and see if they could test the chip for ya.

My first comment was simply implying that its usually cheaper to get a whole new case + ps than buying them both seprately on top of checking the cpu for damage. Nothing personal.

Are you sure the Mainboard is messed up or could it be just a problem from a bummed out power supply ?

I hooked up the new PS, and when I powered it on....I started smelling the electric burning smell right before my other PS blew so I unplugged it and haven't tried since.
