Motherboard/Cpu help needed

Currently running an ASUS AN7 with an overclocked mobile running at 2.2/2.4
6600 GT w 256, 2.0 gb (2 1gb 3200 sticks)

I'd like to upgrade to a faster amd processor and possibly a 256 vid card. I do not wish to drop big bucks on mb and proc (will be going for the bigger guns end of year so i need a stopgap for now) so looking for an efficient, decent upgrade.

My questions are
a) What AMD proc is a good option (bang for the buck)
b) If im forced to change MB in case "a" isnt supported by it, I need a suggestion on which MB

Thanks in advance. I know alot of you usually have pretty good advice that Ive used before with regards to pc hardware.

If you can wait untill the first of June when AMD and Intel will be pushing AM2 and Conroe out the door. Prices on existing AMD 64bit mobo's and chips will take a decent nose dive in price. If you time it right.....

( edit ) You may find this link usefull at anyrate http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu.html.

Amd 64 3000's are fairly cheap already for the power. If all you need is something to hold you over that's probably what I would go with for now. From there I'd pick any compatible MSI, Abit or Asus mobo that's the cheapest to go with that cpu. If that's all you're looking for that's my guess for what I'd pick anyway.
