NHL Trade Deadline

What the hell, let's talk hockey. What do you think about what your teams did on the deadline?

Being from Edmonton, I'm obviously an Oilers fan. I think we did alright. We needed a goaltender super freaking bad, and I guess Roloson fits the bill. He's not amazing, hopefully he'll just be steady. The Oilers proved in December and January they're one of the top teams in the league, if they get some average goaltending (which we didn't all season). If we started the season with a real goaltender, we'd be challenging for top spot in the league probably. Tough to win games when you're down 2-0 after every fucking first period on weak goals. I'd have loved it if we hit a home run and got someone like Luongo, but it looks like Florida is serious about keeping their team together with the signing of Jokinen. Phoenix was asking too much for Joseph, Biron wasn't available in Buffalo and Noronen was too unknown, Theodore is a balding, injured head case, and Belfour would get boo'd if he played here. Makes me wonder what we do for a goalie next year, but for this year I think it's about the best that could have been done, there just wasn't a really good goaltender available for a reasonable price (as evidenced by the fact no really good ones were moved). Some complain a first round draft pick is too much for a rental, but this year's draft is incredibly shallow with only half a dozen bona-fide prospects, and we'd be picking middle of the pack anyway. No loss.

Sergei Samsonov from Boston for Marty Reasoner, Yan Stastny and a second round pick? Not so sure I like it. It's a good trade for the short term, Samsonov has got speed and skill for sure. But he's a rental as well, and we gave up a lot for him. Reasoner is a solid third line center, good on faceoffs, good on the PK, and can chip in 30-40 points a year. Stastny's only played a few games, but he looked pretty good in them, he might turn out to be a good player. I like getting Samsonov, I just think we gave up too much.

Pretty boring deadline day really. Not too many big deals, it was mostly the Dance of the Depth Defensemen as TSN was calling it.

Other deals:

Lundmark to Calgary - this is a great trade for Lundmark, and might work out great for Calgary too. He's never performed to potential, but Calgary's got so little depth that he'll probably get a lot of quality ice time. He might even end up centering Iginla. I think they gave up a 3rd round pick, big deal.

Theodore for Aebeischer - great trade by Gainey. Theodore's hurt, he's a headcase, and might never regain his form because of the new equipment rules (he's not a big guy to begin with). And he's making 5.5 and then 6 million on the remaining years of his contract after this year, which is ridiculous. Aebeischer might not be great, but he's good, and Huet's been playing alright in Montreal. Good trade for Montreal, not really sure how good it is for Colorado. Might be looked back upon as a great trade, or a terrible one, depending how Theodore responds.

Vancouver did a good job picking up a few defensemen since half of their are hurt. Good trades, but it won't fix Vancouver. They'll have to rebuild in the next year or two, they'll be out in the first round (and they could still miss the playoffs) and will trade Bertuzzi and Naslund in the summer if they do. Their GM's over the years have done the team no favors with their mediocre goaltending.

Yeah, cause Vancouver is lightyears better than the Oil at 2 points ahead (with one more game played)....

Feb 4th - 3-1 Edmonton
Dec 21st - 7-6 Edmonton
Dec 1st - 5-3 Edmonton
Oct 8 - 4-3 Edmonton

Yeah, the Oilers really suck compared to Vancouver, you're right.

Red face

One thing I find interesting is that with the addition of Lundmark, the Calgary Flames have 6 Edmonton (or area) born players on their active roster (Phaneuf, Iginla, Ference, Lundmark, Langkow, and Hulse) with 0 Calgary born players. Overall, Lundmark is easily an upgrade to Weimer, (and both deals involved 4th round picks, thus making it a net gain for the Flames) but I can't help but feel underwhelmed as both the Canucks and Oilers improved a heck of a lot more in the short term. While I can take a little bit of solace in the fact that it was clearly a seller's market and both the Oilers and Nucks overpaid for their rentals, a potential playoff matchup with either team looks much more dangerous than it did a few days ago. I suppose I'll feel better after Warrener and Hamrlik are healthy again and Hulse can go play in Omaha where he won't be the weakest link night after night.

Yeah, and the captain of the Oilers is from Calgary (Jason Smith), and the heart of the team is from Banff (Ryan Smyth). It's kind of funny actually, Lowe seemed to make a concerted effort over the past few years to draft and/or trade for players that were born, raised, or played junior in Alberta. That's fallen off this year, but in 2003-04 over half the team was from Alberta at some points.

I'm a huge Oilers fan, and i'm overall really happy with our moves.

Roloson - great, probably the best we could have done, as you said. Obviously he can be great (tied for best save percentage last seasons, #2 in GAA), and with a serious contender in front of him, hopefully he will be. It was kind of a gamble, and i'm anxious to see how he does.

Samsonov - great trade. He's a great player, and i'm hoping he ends up really enjoying playing here and signs long term. I like Reasoner a lot, but what can you do.

Mike Morrison - This is where i can't understand what the hell Lowe was thinking. Morrison is clearly a pretty great goalie who just needs some experience. He's clearly better than Conklin, and he could have been the future goaltender for the Oilers, but they decide to place him on waivers and keep Conklin? WTF?

Overall great day. I'm really excited about the end of the year now.

Conklin has played better and more consistently in the NHL than Morrison. Up until this fall, he was most likely going to be on the US Olympic team. He played great for them in the world championships, and at the end of 2003-04 he played well enough for the Oil to win something like 18 of their last 24 games (getting Petr Nedved in return for loaning Jussi Markanen to the Rangers for the season didn't hurt either. Boy were the rest of the NHL GM's pissed about that one). I don't know what the hell is up with him this year, hopefully he can regain his form.

As far as Morrison goes, he's been a career minor leaguer. Typically there's a reason why you end up in the ECHL. He played exceptional at some points, but others he shit the bed (4 goals in 10 shots against Van). Maybe he will be a consistent NHL goaltender at some point, but I honestly doubt it. He's about the same age as Conklin, he's not some 20 year old rookie getting his first sniff.

Oilers did great this deadline, best deal was Rolston. I just have a feeling he will perform very for Edmonton.I will comment on the Canucks as they are my hometown team.

Weinrich was a good pickup, the rest of the deals were solid. I really think GM Nonis did a good job of not over-paying for his rental players. We only lost:

4th Round Pick
2nd Round Pick
Conditional Pick
Brent Skinner (minor leaguer)
Steve McCarthy
Tomas Mojzis (minor leaguer)

McCarthy only went after all the other deals had taken place and there was no room for him left in Vancouver. Mojzis was promising and he's tough to lose, but oh well. Other than that, no big deal on the picks or Skinner.

We reinforced our back end with a decent goalie and a couple veteran D-men, overall I think very smart moves by the Canucks. Things could go very right or very wrong for this team in the playoffs (depending on what injuries heal in time, and which team and players decide to show up (94 point Bertuzzi or third-liner Bertuzzi?). If they go well, I think the core might remain intact. Bertuzzi's days might be numbered even if things go well.

They will not trade Naslund, not sure what made you think that, but they won't. He's the heart and soul of this team and he's still performing well, considering he's playing on an underachieving line on an underachieving team and he's been silently injured most of the season. Maybe Morrison might go in the off-season, that would be more likely.

I doubt they mix up any of the core Defence right now, unless they can't afford Jovo. And they'd just be retarded to tough the Sedins and Anson Carter.

Heh nice, the Oil get a goaltender then decided last night to not bother playing defense. 5-2 Sharks, good loss boys.
