Yet another computer thread.

With a twist that no longer applies, since Cathan has been so helpful he got the cash.

Well, Cathan wrote out a great guide to building a computer in a PM. Thanks for that. And between him and some of Vorph's posts in the other threads I know what I'm going with now, minus a couple things.

If I get a soundcard it'll be Bluegears, that's just me not willing to support Creative. Took Dekton's suggestion for a keyboard. And, following his other suggestion, what is a good case? What do you look for in a case? And any really interesting mouse options I should know about?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811119077

Think I'll go with that case. Any comments?

One word: article. If I write a piece on the auto-surf industry and get one of my Mom's friends to publish it in one of their fine online newspapers, I can write the whole thing off, profits and all, as "research".

(Is serious.)

I'd be interested in doing this if you'll give me some direction of what you plan on doing with this computer. Are you a gamer? What applications do you use? OS preference? It's always important to design the computer you're getting for your specific needs. That way I can allocate the money you specified to the components that will benefit you most.

PMing you, the other computer thread your posts made sense.

my picks, feel free to critique them...

I only picked stuff from newegg because they're hard to beat and you'll be hardpressed to find better customer service should there be a problem.

Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ 1GHz FSB Socket 939 Dual Core Processor - Retail
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103562

Motherboard: ASUS A8N5X Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 ATX AMD Motherboard (this is the mobo I have, works great for me and it's 5 stars for a non sli card, I don't like sli, wot)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131569

RAM: CORSAIR XMS 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Dual Channel Kit System Memory (I like corsair ram /shrug it's reliable and a good brand name)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145575
2 gigs because you said you didn't want to upgrade for 3 years. Right now all games only need 1 gig so 2 should be good for a while and xms ram is pretty good stuff, especially with current prices having dropped.

Video Card: eVGA Geforce 7800GT 256-P2-N515-AX (if you want the 7800 which runs every game I have wide open with good framerate imo)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130247

or the eVGA Geforce 7800GTX 256-P2-N527-AX Video Card
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...14130254#Combo
WITH THIS VIDEOCARD THERE'S A COMBO DEAL FOR AN X2 4600 FOR 366$ AFTER 100$ MIRL...

Power Supply Antec NeoHE 500 500W Power Supply
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817103940
I like being able to select what cables I plug in instead of one big jumbled mess of cables and I don't care for anything under 500W for pushing a gaming rig

Case: Antec Solution SLK3000-B Black Computer Case
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129152
Nothin special but it has a 120 mm fan to pull air out from the cpu and an 80 in the side to push air onto the cpu, I like that myself, could save from going into aftermarket cooling if you ever decide to oc

HD Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 250GB 3.5" Serial ATA150 Hard Drive
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148065
since you said you wanted a single drive at least 160 gigs
Everyone here knows I like the raptors but I can't advise you to buy the new 150gig raptor for 300$, that's a decision everyone has to make on their own performance wise. I like raptor, thus I have 2 74s in raid and I go home at night feeling pretty good about it.

cd/dvd burner NEC Black IDE/ATAPI DVD Burner Model ND-3550A - OEM
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827152058

Soundcard (if you want it) Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeMusic Sound Card - Retail
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16829102188
I know cr34t1v3 1z z3 d3v1l d00d!!! but for gaming sound they are the only option imo, hard to argue that. I have this soundcard myself and it boosted my game performance quite a lot as the onboard sound was chugging a bit in fear, farcry and doom3.

Speakers 5.1 Logitech X-530 5.1 Speaker - Retail
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16836121118
They sound great for the price. I split the side/rear speaker port out to my old 2.1 speaker setup so I'd have a little more sound all the way around me (generic improv on 7.1!!!)

If you want 7.1 speakers someone else may have to pick those out, good ones run 300$ or so last I checked.

Any other peripherals (keyboard/mouse) you can choose yourself I suppose. I like logitech cordless mouse/keyboards myself.

I still use my old pc as well and I use a linksys router, not the wireless. Wireless compromises security, some fuck can drive by your house lookin for a signal and hop on the internet from your house. I don't care for wireless because of that.

You didn't say you needed a monitor so I'll assume you have one. I still prefer crt/flatscreen monitors over lcd's because the best flat panels have better quality for the price by FAR over lcd's. I can absorb the space and weight con for several hundred dollars difference... especially if you're a gamer.

Those are my pics. Feel free to criticize. I'm always interested in learning more myself...

I don't actually have a monitor (here, I have a 24in CRT Multisync flatscreen in storage on the other side of the country), but I'm going to get a Dell FPW as soon as either a cheap one comes up on eBay (saw a 24in with a Buy Now for $400.00 the other day from a guy with 100% positive feedback from over 1,000 people. Missed it though) or one of the various Dell coupon sites I keep track of has one pop up.

I'll probably get a Logitech mouse/keyboard. They seem comfy. I'm using a logitech mouse on this PoS laptop right now in fact.

Those look like great picks to me. Is the X2 4600 combined deal really that good? The 4600 seems like overkill but.. hey, I can work with overkill.

100$ off a 466$ processor is a good chunk of change if both components are what you want. I have a 7800 gt and I doubt I'll upgrade for at least 2 years but if you want 3 year no upgrades a 7800 gtx will just about guarantee that, as well as a 4600 dual core. Each core in the 4600 dual core is faster than the cores in a 3800 so it does help for some things. It will help more down the road in that 3 year lifetime for 30$ more if you want the 7800 gtx vs the 7800 gt. I like the 7800 gt though, works great for me, saved me 150$ too /shrug.

I didn't hear about the 1900xt until today when my friend called me. I will have to read up on that card and see how much it is. Ati cards are notorious for being hard to find for a while. I hear there's 4 versions of it as well.

Two speed bins, each of which can come in normal or crossfire mastercard versions. So no different than the 7800 line, which actually has 3 speed bins.

Is there any particular reason you're shopping all tiger direct? If you look at newegg for the same parts I know for a fact that video card is cheaper. I priced the same model for 300$ or less at newegg if I'm not mistaken just today for aulirophile.

I like that evga 7800gt as well, it's cranked up higher than the others, except the bfg version, and it costs a good bit less from what I saw.

I don't know anything about motherboards but unless they're giving it away practically for free I don't trust anything but msi and asus myself. Those are the only ones I've had good experiences with, and still, I prefer asus.

I think corsair's best ram is the xms and you can get 2 1gb sticks for just a bit more than the 512 of the twinx you're looking at.

Newegg has an NEC black dvd burner for 40$ and yeah it reads dvd's as well. Mine came with some free discs too.

That's a stout psu at 650W. I don't know anything about silverstone but if you don't already know the wattage rating system for psu's is bogus. It does put out 650W but not sustained wattage. Sustained wattage is what is key. It's hard to find what a psu's sustained wattage is but if you can find something like that and compare it to comparable psu's sustained wattage that's the best way to compare. More than likely that psu is sufficient though.

You may want to consider one of the ati cards if you're a highend gamer willing to shell out that much for a video card already. The x1800xt hangs pretty close to sli'ed 7800gtx's and even tops it in some tests. x1800xt lags behind in some tests also though, but for a single card half the price of the 7800gtx X2 + sli mobo it's a way better deal. X1800xt at newegg ranges from 430$ to a little over 500$ for the 256mb version. That's pretty comparable to what you were willing to spend on a 7800gt at tiger direct. The performance comparison between the 2 is sick too, definitely take an x1800xt over the 7800gt. For a little over 500$ you can have the x1900xt at newegg just stay away from that powercooler model. It's memory speed is half the others for some reason. I don't know if it's a mistake or what but 725mhz <<< 1450 mhz.

Few Suggestions

You are getting some great stuff man.

Here are two things I noticed that may need some attention.

Case: An investment in a good case always pays off. I have used my old coolermaster for three builds and it still looks awesome. In other words, you will not regret paying more for a nice case.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129154

antec 180- Good case, deserves consideration.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811112077

Lian Li PC-60 A very nice case.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811112084

Lian Li Memorial....If you prefer something a little out of the ordinary.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811119077

Coolermaster...They always make great stuff. I have really enjoyed working with this case. Easy, good airflow and cheap.

HDDs

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136012 Raptor

Like Cathan was saying. The raptors are sick.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136003 Caviar

I think this would be another viable choice for you.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16823175103

Saitek Keyboard- I really like this keyboard. Feels really nice and heavy, and looks cool

Have a great build man!

this ram is a good deal if you don't mind rebates

I believe the prices are in Canadian, thus the disparity on the tiger direct site.
