Gay post ahead:

I've gotten in to astronomy lately. A couple of friends from school have a telescope that they take to the top of a nearby mountain in the back of their truck. The mirror is almost 5 feet in diameter. Takes them a good 45 minutes to assemble and then they have to wait for the mirror to cool down before using it. So, they use that time to toss back a few beers and educate those of us who go on the various constellations, etc. Might be super nerdy to the max, but it's pretty fucking cool when you can look through a telescope and actually see another galaxy vs "oh, shit, look, it's the moon!"

Or you could rape hookers.

Astronomy's pretty neat. I've never once looked through a telescope, but I love reading space.com and about the physics involved in it. It's a pretty humbling science to get into, for sure. We're so fucking insignificant, it really puts things in perspective.

I have a perspective tool I use in life with that theme in mind. I call it dialing out. When something bad happens I think of it on as big of a timeline as I can see that event becoming irrelevant. Say I wreck my car today. If I look at my life in 3 years or so then the event is insignificant if nothing but the car was damaged... If I get a bad grade on a test this semester then the day after this semester ends it doesn't make a fuck anymore at all. That's one reason I like school. I start fresh every semester.

For anything good that happens I realize the saying time flies really is true so I try to dial in and soak up every moment of it I can. It's kinda rare we truly realize we're having a really good time during it so I try to catch every detail about it I can.

It doesn't always work when so many things pile up at once or when you're just really down. I think it's a good philosophy tool though. Generally I just ignore anything bad and completely file it away as if it never happened almost. I don't ignore the consequences, but I do try to ignore the impact on how I feel though.

I guess it's all about figuring out how to trick yourself into being happy because there's nothing to be upset about which only leaves you with things to be happy about, lol. That sounds like a math equation or some probability logic. If I can't solve for the probability of x event directly then I'll solve for 1 - prob( of x event)!

Bralkan... Do you think Hitler used that same logic?

Well with regard to hitler, many historians have suggested that once he realized he could not defeat the USSR and thus couldn't win the war, he decided he would try to prolong the war as long as possible in order to inflict as many casualties as possible to the jews, gypsies, russians, etc etc. This decision doomed at least 1.5 million German soldiers under his command to a pointless death in the final years of the war.

So in some ways, his logic is the same as yours, focus on whatever positive goals he could (in his insane paradigm) while ignoring the overwhelmingly negative evidence he was presented with. In other words, full-blown denial of reality.

On weekends (and weekdays too) I play a lot of soccer. That's the main thing I do for fun, other than hanging out with friends, drinking and partying like you mentioned.

Winter: downhill skiing, gonna do a lot more park work if my hip heals up before the end of the season (that's what I get for skiing four out of five weekends in January). Most days downhill's getting pretty boring unless I spend an hour hiking to some godforsaken ridgeline. Hockey, either organized in a league or just pickup games at the local outdoor rink. Then the usual stuff like hanging with friends, books, dvds, games, girlfriend, and so on.

Summer: camping, hiking, canoeing, jogging, tossing around various objects with friends, rollerblading, hockey, water skiing/wakeboarding/tubing if someone's willing to pull me, mountain biking and the usuals.

Metranon sounds good.

Eomer - you HAVE to find someone with a decent high powered telescope.

Actually seeing another planet with your own eye (just 1!) - and not just see it, but see it move, is really humbling.

Canada has some climbing - go do that (may be a bit cold; could just goto a gym).

I just pretty much read for school, goto work, come home and sleep. I guess I play guitar some.
