To provide further data I am willing to bet that 90% of all University elections (and you know thats where young politicians are made) are won by one of the top two spending candidates. I know it works like that at my school.

I think the saddest part of this poll is that all 4 options, including 'who gives a fuck', are neck and neck.

I sometimes wonder if the 'who gives a fuck' crowd are the people who used to vote Democrat and now don't care, which is causing the imbalance of power.

At my school, they rig elections, or they'll make a big competition out of a lower office in order to put who they want in the higher office.

The "they" is the incumbants. Knowledge of how to pull this off is passed down. They have their friends work the voting booths, tear down the opponents' posters, spread lies about the opponent, etc.

Basically, real American politics.

It's funny in an ironic way that an Iraqi girl won a treasurer position through a rigged election while the voting was going on in Iraq, and ol' G.W. was screaming about how Iraqis need to learn how democracy works. Apparently that one understands it pretty well.

well what I mean to say is that politicians can only use public money to run for office...if they spend a cent from any other source than the designated amount then they are forced to leave the race

everyone has the exact same amount to spend and no more, regardless of who you are and what office you've held in the past

I'm sure they would find a way to have their most powerful corporate allies advocate their candidacy in some indirect fashion. You could do nothing at all, but if Wal-Mart took it upon itself to get your name out the votes would just pour in anyway. Companies usually don't seem to want to risk alienating any of their customers like that but if it was an institution that already permeates the American landscape and vast amounts of kickbacks were involved the attitude might get modified pretty quickly.

It would be nice if you could feel like these people were really representing you at all, millionaires or not. In this day and age we might as well tear down the capitol and telecommunicate everything. Make the motherfuckers sit out filibusters by a monitor and mic in a room open to the constituency somewhere that is actually in the state they are representing rather than kicked back inside the beltway. Force them to be available for Q&A right outside the statehouse afterwards so people have immediate face-to-face contact during hot topic debates even if they can't travel across the country. This sounds like some feel good pie in the sky shit, but D.C. seems so far removed from the several and disparate needs of this nation's far flung regional locales that it is hard imagine that our senators and representatives actually hold the concerns of their constituents in mind at all times.
