| Dell 2405FPW I know a few people on this board have this monitor, wanted to get some opinions and an idea of what you paid for it. Trying to snag one for as cheap as possible, lowest I've came so far is just under $700 using a 25% off coupon and a 35 off 300. I've heard rumors of getting one for < 600, but it involved purchasing a system with the monitor and then just ebaying the system. Link for the curious. Thanks! |

| Unless you want to get a 2405 for cheap (paid a bit over $800 for mine in November) I'd wait for the 2407 for the HDCP and 6ms gray to gray. Also if you want to game and run a nice looking resolution, you'll need a powerful pc with a powerful video card. LCDs still need improvement in general (black levels, response time), but I'm very happy with my 2405. |

What pisses me off about the response times are how misleading they are. Tomshardware did an article a couple months back looking at a bunch of things, including LCD response times. A lot of manufacturers who had 8ms grey to grey response times actually had average response times of anywhere from 12-30ms. Any response time below 16ms I believe is unobservable by the human eye so if these monitors had true 8ms response time, you would never have motion blur or ghosting. The sharp aquos had the lowest average response time of 12ms...kinda wish I had gotten that one now. The reason I haven't bought one of these dell monitors yet is because they all lack hdcp which is going to be necessary for true HD video from HD-dvd and blu-ray. How is the 2405 in general when it comes to response times? Do you ever get motion blur or slight ghosting? I assume you do or you wouldn't have brought up the thing about LCD's poor response times.

+1 Internets | As for black levels, it's unfortunate. Sharp AQUOS is supposed to be strong on black levels so things are definitely improving in general with each new generation. However, if you do a calibration on the monitor, you can get the max performance out of it and often make blacks look better. I did a AVIA calibration on my lcd tv and it helped a lot. AVIA is just a calibration dvd you can purchase off amazon for about $30 and it runs you through everything and tells you exactly how to set your tv or monitor settings. That brightness problem you are having will virtually go away with a proper calibration. Some of my whites appeared washed out or too bright and after calibrating the problems were gone.

| http://www.prad.de/en/monitore/ghosting.html Yeah...I can definitely see ghosting with that (in full screen). |

| Yeah I thought about getting an AVIA disc (would like to calibrate my TVs too) but I wasn't sure how well it would work with a computer based LCD screen. I get by though with adjusting things in the regular menus and drivers. It isn't so bad now, but I have it set to 0 brightness. |

+2 Internets | I was looking at this Dell monitor today thinking about buying it, but I had a few questsions about LCD's in general. I'v read somewhere that things dont look so pretty if you dont run them at their recommended resolution. So when this thing has a resolution of 1920x1200, is it actually going to look crappy if my computer cant run games that high? The dead pixle thing also scares the crap out of me, because I dont want to buy a $800 monitor only to have 1 dead pixle, which isnt considered broken, ruin everything I run on it. Also I'v heard talk about Motorolla having new LCD hardware? Anyone know about that? |

| I got a Dell 24" and it had a dead pixel, it was in a bad spot and wasn't covered under warranty unless it was 8 or more. I just returned it no problem, of course their returns are a bit on the slow side... |

| Just to update the thread, I went ahead and bought mine. I got it for $715 shipped with a 25% off coupon and a 35 off 300. I gotta say, so far its been worth every penny. Mine didn't have any dead pixels on arrival (thank god), so I didn't have to deal with returning it. UPS was a bit on the slow side but thats normal around here. Zuul, it really depends on the game. I can post pics this weekend of EQ2 running at different resolutions and you can see what you think...personally I wouldn't run it at anything other than the recommended resolution but its somewhat subjective. For BF2 there is no native widescreen support so I run it at 1600x1200 which looks ok for a FPS. I decided as far as HDCP and whatnot wasn't worth waiting for and potentially paying a premium. |
