| You are not damn right | Security camera? I have a really nice car in an area I don't completely trust. I've worked my ass off for this car, and I don't want people fucking with it. I have no garage. I keep it in a "car port" in my driveway (tent like thing) I have 2 dogs, and a window right near the car, but i'm still worried people are going to break into it or try to straight up steal it. + Because it's in the port, i don't have a visual I was considering setting up a camera out there, and linking it to my laptop or computer. This would allow me to actually view the car at any given time, and would allow me to have evidence in case anything happens. So, that being said I have no idea how to go about it. What kind of power the camera runs off of, how to run the link (wireless?) I don't want to dump alot of money. I've seen good looking things for 150$ or so @ bestbuy, but i'm clueless. I know some of you guys have to have experience with surveillance systems, insight please?

| i don't know anything about high tech surveillance but you might be able to simply set up a wireless web cam. You said there was a window facing the car outside, right? You could put a web cam on the window sill and plug it into a nearby outlet and view it on any computer. I’m sure it must come with a software package that also allows you to record. Also, if you’re really uneasy I’d get an alarm, even a passive one. If the car is right outside you’ll have no trouble hearing it, should it go off. Car thieves count on the fact that normally people ignore car alarms, so they can set one off while getting into the car, but they need to actually get inside to shut it off. Also, get a motion sensitive light outside the car port. If someone does attempt something you need enough light or the camera won't get any useful visual clues. | Linksys and other manufacturers sell wireless "secruity cams". Some can be POE (power over ethernet), others will require an AC outlet. Most have a built in webserver too. So, if you have experience configuring a web-based router you should have no problem with it. They run a couple $100 I think. If you need something to record video (to have evidence later on), your going to need the storage to do so and be willing to take the time to delete old video thats no longer needed.

| At a few of my properties in Seattle, I have a VoloView camera system installed, with Network Client (software) that allows continuous video recording and 24/7 alarm monitoring. Unless you are willing to spend top dollar, recording video will be a difficult task - if you are planning instantaneous recall of any point in a certain set duration of recording, that is. It is my understanding that there are programs (maybe VoloLite) whereby as soon as a motion alarm is triggered it activates the video capture feature and records action from that point onward. That might be your best bet, next to building a garage.

| Why do something passive like video monitoring? I say setup a sentry gun like they did here: http://www.hackaday.com/entry/1234000427059760/ From the article: Quote:

+4 Internets | Just seen this in a newsletter.... "Stop car thieves with the Auto-Lock. The steel pedal-clamping system (which is impervious to drilling and sawing) fits around your brake or clutch pedal so that it can't be depressed. The lock has an encrypted, four-sided key that can't be duplicated. Cost $49.95. Available at auto parts and hardware stores."
