New study recently completed by the WHO on the statistical presence of mental disorders. America has the highest rate of mental disorders in the world (26.3% of the population) and the highest rates of severe and moderate disorders (7.7% and 9.4% respectively) the second highest instance of mild disorders (9.2%).

Also it appears the US has the most impulse control disorders.

Comments? I find this somewhat disturbing but it doesn't surprise me.

Generally these things are skewed by the amount of people who seek help. We have a society that is full of "self-help" and people with enough money to see a "therapist" for their problems. I would take this with a grain of salt the size of the lake in Utah.

Table 1, shows the numbers of people interviewed. Timeframe when you're going for a snapshot of information isn't exactly relevant. The questions were presented in interview form by trained interviewers, but the assesment test involved is listed, you could dig up the history of it if you wanted to see the questions that badly. I have no particular objection to questioning how statistics are gathered, but this is Harvard, the WHO, and a very distinguished authorship, both mathematically and psychiatrically. Doubting everything is just as bad as believing everything and this, particular, study seems very well done if you actually read it.

Whats fucked up is how in America they push fucking pills down your throat for every god dammned thing.

For instance we took our 2 yr old to the doctor a few years back, and he had a fit at the doctors, you know scared and shit?

Well the doc, seeing him 5 minutes pitching a fit, told us to get him on riddalin, or whatever the fuck it was. 2 yr old kid on mental medication?
Thats some seriously fucked up shit. Needles to say we never saw that fucknut again.

Even in schools, the teachers themselves "suggest" that some kids are to be on medication, because they dont listen, or pay attention. So they could have their classroom of well behaved zombies, so they dont have to actualy do their job. They come up with terms like ADHD, ADD, hehre, but they describe almost all kids at a young age. The make our youth zombies movement is what I call it.

Huh? That map shows life expectancy to be 10-20 years less everywhere except three countries. It certainly doesn't factor in the quality or length of life when you get thrown into an Eastern European mental hospital. How is it relevant?

Canada, France, Monaco, Iceland, Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland, Sweden, Israel, Japan, Australia, and i'm skipping a few, are all listed with a longer life expectancy.

How is that relevant?
Some posters before me claimed that since no one live as long as the people in the USA, then they don't get to suffer as many disorders, which was pretty much bullshit.

While the US do provide a pretty solid life expectancy, it's far from being the best one.

Well, the placebo effect takes place then. If people keep telling you that you are mentally ill, you start to become mentally ill. And there is a lot of that floating around, like with kids getting pills shoved down their throat. Which is a good explanation for the results of the study, at least partially.

Also I seriously doubt most of the kids who are put on those drugs are mentally disturbed in any way, but altering the brain chemistry of a normal, sane, healthy person can make them mentally ill. So over-prescription might be another reason the instance of mental illness is so high.

Not that this is a scientific study or anything, but I went to private school where most mothers had their children on some sort of mental-control (ADD, ADHD) medicine. Now that I think about it, the kids who took nothing and were controlled by their parents turned out to be top of their class and quite successful in high school. The drugged children are all druggies, drunks, and passed out somewhere at this very moment.

I've seen and heard similar things... none of the kids on meds ever turn out to well. Do a search in any of the cutter/anorexia/bulimia communities on MySpace/LiveJournal and a fair number are on meds prior to their condition. I wonder if it's just teenagers driving the numbers up... that's almost scarier then 1/4 of the country having a condition. Because if it was spread out in ages it'd be one thing, but once those kids start getting older the number of "adults" with mental disorders will increase dramatically.
