You need to go into the iPod through My Computer and look at it like a hard disk, or folder. Go into it and then unhide all folders, which will reveal the folder 'iPod_Control' and then the folder within that, 'Music'. All of the iPods music is within that folder, but it is unorganized, you cannot find specifically what you wanted to get through here. If you just want to copy everything from the iPod then just copy the music folder from here to your hard drive. But, if you want specific things, go into iTunes and add the Music folder in the ipod to your library, that tricks the computer into thinking the music is already on your hard drive. Then just drag and drop the music you want from iTunes library to your computer.
I'm not sure if there is a simpler way but this is how I got it done, good luck.

Please...

If you're into music at all there's no better purchase you can make. Its sorta irrelevant that taking music directly from someone elses pod is a pain in the ass cause there's a million ways to get their files.

What I did to fill my library up was take my laptop with me whenever I went to a friends house and ripped every cd they had while I was visiting. For friends that live far away that had stuff I wanted I just had em zip up files and dropload em' to me (http://www.dropload.com). Then I went through the Itunes store and got a bunch of older stuff nobody had cd's for anymore. Then I hit up bearshare every once in a while for stuff I can't find any other way.

I agree with you in one sense though. It seems like a waste of money when you don't have one. But trust me dude once you get yours you'll wonder how the fuck you ever lived without the thing.

I hate DRM and won't be supporting a company (Apple, Sony, etc.) that uses it in their portables. I can live without iTunes too, especially since I would be shocked if more than 20% of the music I own or have dl'ed is available on it.

I want a device that has:
  • No DRM whatsoever

  • Lets you copy to or from the device mounted directly as a HD in windows with no tard software required

  • Support for FLAC plus either Ogg Vorbis or MusePack (preferably the latter, but either one kicks the shit out of MP4)

  • Gapless playback -- it's been in fucking LAME for years, but most hardware ignores the data

  • Extremely high quality sound, not just "barely adequate for the shitty earbuds we decided to include" but quality high enough that using a pair of Shure or Etymotic isolating headphones doesn't immediately make you realize what a POS your player is.

  • Open source software/firmware so that people can add features, codecs, etc. to the player

Unfortunately that doesn't exist. The Rio Karma was close, but the failure rate on them was so high that they discontinued it, and new Rio players lack all the best features of the Karma (including the dock with ethernet port). The NeurosAudio player also had some of the best features, especially the open software and codec support, and the dockable 128MB player with a 20+GB backpack is still one of the best ideas anyone in the industry has had. Unfortunately their player is bulky and rather heavy, and they also had QC issues recently.

If only Slim Devices would make a portable. They could easily crush the competition just like they have in the stereo component side of things.

http://www.advancedmp3players.co.uk/...roducts_id=623 coolest mp3 player yet. Not as many features, but damn it just looks cool.

Anyway, for anyone bitching about moving files from an ipod, wtf ever. There are very few mp3 players that function well, and don't have some attempt at proprietary. You can use the ipod as a flash device if you want, to move the music files. But, if you want the stuff added onto the player itself, yea you have to get a little tricky. So what, it's doable. Try that with any of the DRM stuff that the companies are doing now. Not possible yet.

also, this

Man, I bought the FM tuner for my ipod, so now I listen to it all day at work and then I have it in my car too. I rarely ever listen to the radio now. I've got my own personal radio station right at my fingertips.

Buy a Creative mp3 player, they are much cheaper and are the exact same shit with nearly twice the battery life.

The Creative software is complete shit for playing the music on your pc but it’s a great file manager for the Zen players, copying mp3s on or off the player and organizing them is easy as hell with the Creative software.

Yeah me too. I road trip alot so I got the one from Monster in like March of last year, plus I have the mini travel speakers from Altec Lansing for hotel rooms and my bedroom. Only time I listen to the radio is if I'm in a rent-a-car with XM or something.

Tip: For your car at home if you can remove the antenna do it cause you get less interference from the local stations that way.

I just made sure to find a frequency without any other stations within .2 either direction.

Only problem I have with it, and I've been told by a friend that the corded ones fix this, is that the volume level is lower then playing from the CD player.

Pretty much what Vorph said, my main problem with the Ipod is that Apple with do whatever the recording industry wants them to in terms of DRM, and I want no part of that.

I have an old piece of shit Archos player that just mounts as a drive, and personally that works great for me. I don't need or want something like Itunes controlling where my files go, how many times I can burn songs, etc etc. The player's a piece of shit, but until it dies I'll just stick with it. Hopefully by then a really good portable audio player will be out.

I've heard the iRivers are good players and there have been a lot of enthusiast mods have been done with them.

Personally I picked up a cheap MPIO FG-100 which sounds good and works as a USB drive.
