Slam poet.

Posted this a long while back, but right when I did, the site I linked went to shit. Well it's back up, so I figured I'd give it a bump. I'm pretty confident that there are quite a number of people here who would enjoy it. The poet's name is Buddy Wakefield and for lack of a better word, he's fucking amazing.

The videos are all real media :-\ (meh.) but even so, still well worth a listen.

I can't say I'm a fan. In most cases, that type of poetry is way too dependent on the style of reading for my taste. It's not enough about language and content. It's a lot about the theatrical aspects, which aren't too interesting or entertaining. But that said, I don't know a lot about it, so there may be something that I'm just not getting. I hate a lot of poetry at first and then begin to love it later on.

I agree with you that the style is absolutely dependent on the delievery, but that is what I enjoy most about it. You're hearing the poem just as the poet wants you too. For me it's refreshing to see the amount of energy some of the poets have, Wakefield being a prime example. Another thing about him is while the delivery is incredible, the content is just as rich.

To crimson and matt le douche,

Welcome to my thread guys! Nice to see you!

Well I'm not going to throw away the whole genre of poetry or anything, but I can't get into it. I'm a lot more into the poem and not the delivery. Though a (regular) poem in the hands of a good reader who knows what to stress (stress, not yell) and what to say quietly can make a poem a lot better, it's still what's on the paper that matters most. A poem can be read a hundred different ways, but what's written down is always the same.

You just can't hear what the guy's saying half the time with the audience. And all the applause and shit just seems like hype and trashy. I know AMAZING poets who don't get applause like that, because it's a poetry reading, not a rap concert. I've only watched it once, but I think I heard him say some like "shit that's poetry" when talking about something in the middle of his poem. Yuck.

But yeah, I'm talking out of my ass because I don't know enough about it. This is just initial reactions kinda.. though I've been to readings where poets read kind of the same way.. Quincy Troupe for example.. just not enjoyable.
