windows 98 problem

heh its a really old OS but i need to install it to install my Win xp upgrade. i recently pieced together a new computer. The hard drive has win 98 already and i was able boot it but i decided to format my hard drive and reinstall windows 98 and then upgrade it to win xp. but when i reinstalled it, win 98 won't boot...does anyone have some suggestions to what i try to bypass this problem? much appreciation

I'm pretty sure you can start to install XP upgrade then when it asks for proof that this is an upgrade you can insert your 98 disc, then swap again.

You shouldnt really install XP over 98.

You should format to a fresh drive, boot from your XP upgrade CD and when it looks for a previous windows install to upgrade from, it will say none found and ask you to put in a previous WinOS disk and it will just verify that its a real disk, then XP will install like you had a full version.

hey thx for the help guys
turns out win98 loads but takes 20 mins...i left it on and went out for lunch..came back it loaded so i installed win xp...now it loads fine

next time i will keep in mine that i don't need to boot into win98 to install winxp

It may sound like an unnecessary pain in the ass, but I guarantee you it will save you problems in the future if you go back, reformat the hard drive and reinstall windows xp cleanly.

I was just going to write the exact same thing. If you have a way of installing a clean full version of XP, do it. Upgrading an OS can cause problems down the road.
