AVI files through a projector?

I've recently attempted to play AVI files through my projector but upon doing so the image won't display. I can get any other type of video extension to run through and display with ease when I run them, but can't for the life of me figure out why any AVI. files won't display. I've been toying with this for quite some time now and am clueless as to why it won't work. If anyone could tell me what’s causing this to happen and what I could do to fix this it would be greatly appreciated. I do have an AVI codec installed and have tried various ones.

The projector projects your desktop and everything else from your computer, but refuses to show AVI when it is used? So it's just the full display with a black box in middle?

Yep, picture everything normal except where the video would be in the media player is just black
