I tend to agree about Ad-aware and Spybot having gone downhill recently.

Between the two of them I find about half the spyware on a computer I'm fixing for somebody, and then I have to spend another couple hours using Hijack This! (which is by far the best tool, but it's dangerous in the hands of people who actually get spyware on their pcs in the first place) to remove the rest manually.

Seems like the MS thing is worth a shot.

MS just bought out one of the paid anti-spyware solutions. I forget the name of the program but I'm sure its findable on google.

Too bad they wouldn't take time to fix the root cause of the problem rather than bandaid it.

It works nicely, AdAware system smart came up with 0, MS got 9 threats.

I do think its funny that MS didnt rename any of the exes, they are all still named after Giant.

Bullshit. Ad-Aware is the best I've used (although I have not tried this MS thing yet). Only problem with Ad-aware is that you should first go into safe mode, run MSCONFIG and turn off everythign, then run ad-aware. That will remove 99% of all spyware I've run into (I run a business that does PC repair, so I have QUITE a bit of experience in removing that bullshit).

The funny thing is, the whole spyware problem is Microsoft's fault to begin with. Windows is truly a piece of shit operating system -- but hey, if you wanna play games what choice do you have.

Be sure to fuck around with the settings.
When the "auto spyware search" kicks in, it minimizes WoW for some fucking reason.

Because *nix never has secruity flaws?
Say what you want, XP is rock fucking solid. It might be way over priced but it is solid software.

Also, firefox has had plenty of major secruity flaws (like being able to completely spoof the gui in a url). However, with less a smaller % using it why would a programmer write malicious code for it?

Do I think someone should be shot for intergrating the web-browser(IE) with the OS? Hell yea. Something used 99% of the time should not be able to crash the system, especially when they decide not to conform to standards. (Although, most iexpore.exe crashes I've had on XP usually recover)

Again though, Windows 2000 and higher only messes up thanks to the user(sans some IE crashes). Anyone who has a spyware infested Windows box would not end up better on *nix.

OSX might work. I love Aqua, I really do. But being able to goto www.newegg.com and order all my components > closed hardware. (Granted, the new $499 mac is SEXY)

should you be a system engineer in order to remove spyware from your PC?
Adaware sucks ass when used in standard mode, it hardly removes something other than cookies, running real software after adaware will usually result in the same amount of hits of more dangerous stuff than adaware will find.

I'm sorry, if you don't know how to use MSCONFIG and know how to boot into safe mode, you probably should be sticking to gaming consoles or web TVs, or get a Mac.

Rock solid in what regard? Sure it's rock solid after a nice fresh install. But what about a year later after the registry has bloated to 100 million lines? After uninstalling/reinstalling new drivers for your hardware a dozen times? Not to mention any spyware that lodges itself into the system so tight that you're forced to wipe and reload? Is that ROCK FUCKING SOLID?

Unix will always be secure for the simple fact that the USER CANNOT FUCK WITH SYSTEM FILES. Do this right now in XP : Open up a command prompt, type CD \ then type DEL *.* /s

How fucking rock solid is that?

Hurray for security through obscurity! Your windows users can delete system files? Nice setup dude.

The MS spyware tool is excellent compared to any of the free programs.

There is still no such thing as an all-inclusive spyware remover, though.

I've worked on machines that are so bad I can't believe they even run - I'm talking illegal operations when you click ANYTHING. And this was the sole machine running $500 accounting software for a 5 million a year small buisness, with no backup. Yay! And they only had dialup going, imagine a dedicated connect. A few runs of spybot and ad-aware and some reboots later, good as new. As new as a pentium 200 running win98 can be, anyway.

Too bad you need a fucking Computer Science degree to know how to use unix. Or at least a 40 hour class if your data retension is high.

I can show my little 5 yr old how to use windows. There is the diffrence.

Windows is easy to use. And if you have stability problems after a year or two, fucking reformat and reinstall. Problem solved in 1-3 hours.

I completely agree. I'm not advocating that Unix/Linux is for the masses. It's come a long way, but still has a long way to go.
