| you need volality to daytrade... without you get churned... watch all the prop shops numbers rise and fall with volatility... vxo (cboe options volitily) at 24 hasnt even started to hit its straps yet... wait until it gets going In the long run, stops cost more money then they make... assuming you have a postive expectancy, in the case you dont, you wouldnt want to be trading. So 'money saving' stops should be as loose as possible until the trade idea is over. stops are targets... where the market will aim to make people hurt... while im on the soap box... for the person who didnt know the difference between market and limit orders... theres a bid and an ask... a market order buys at the market, i.e. the ask, where a limit order specifies what price you are prepared to buy at. The bit in between the bid and the ask, you must pay and is called the spread... this is a cost that is often ignored. |

| So I invested in a gun company which fell over 60% over a poor forecast, and now some assholes are suing the company for misrepresenting their position in the market in the months leading up to the forecast. =stock drops another 8% |

+39 Internets | soooo, let's say I have $19,000 of real cash to invest right now. I'm not really interested in buying individual stocks, to be honest. I don't have the time, interest or expertise. Most of my RRSP money (similar to 401k I guess) has been in mutual funds. Most in index funds of the CDN and US markets, and then some other stuff in resources, latin america, pacific rim, and European funds. I've done very well the past five years, probably on average 10-12% a year at the absolute least, if not more. I even sold all my holdings just before the bottom fell out in August this year, and bought everything back for 15% cheaper, but that was quite honestly sheer luck. What segment or area should I be targetting right now? |

+1 Internets | I signed up a few days ago but kept forgetting to check when the US market was open. Today I finally said WTH and bought some stuff anyway. I'm 3.25% down, sitting on my arse was a better position, doh! ![]() I made the mistake of reading the bbc business headlines this morning where things sounded slightly optimistic, I know, I'm a moron! 64/68 /facepalm |

| The thing about, especially print, news sources is that by the time they've covered the topic the market is already adjusted. Setting limits to dump a falling stock seems like a bad thing to me. Unless the company has made some very poor decisions (such as, being tied to the mortgage industry) the stock will likely rebound over a four month period. Of course, I have little formal business training and this is just amateur speculation. Last edited by Gahid : 12-14-2007 at 01:53 PM. |

| CGMFX (CGM Focus) has a ridiculous track record. Those proshares leveraged ETFs look pretty interesting as well. For anyone who ever reads the annual report or president's letter I thought this was pretty funny from one of my CFA books. All of these are by Raymond DeVoe. Annual Report: "Your company is now poised for significant earnings growth." (Translation: "We lost so much last year and wrote off everything possible, so earnings couldn't get much worse.") Annual Report: "These results were somewhat below the projections that management had announced publicly during the quarter." (Translation: "We lied." Annual Report: "the quarter's earnings contained a substantial contribution from a settlement arising from the involuntary termination of operating equipment. (Translation: "If the plane hadn't crashed, we would have been in the red. Fortunately, only one was killed, and the insurance company paid off a helluva lot." |

+3 Internets | It will only go through when the US stock market is open I believe, then there's often a couple hour delay once it opens. One thing for sure, I definitely got burned on this game. Started the day before the market went down last week. Down 4.2% overall and 61 / 68. Last edited by Blide : 12-17-2007 at 11:55 AM. |
