Fonts Whine

Not asking for help, but I am just whining, browsers need to support by default way more font families to style text with, there's so god damn little that are universal. Sure you can embed them, so they have to download them and get security warning pop-ups which sucks donkey dick as well. Why is the universaly supported font list so damn small and lame. RAWR RAWR DEVELOPMENT RANT RAVE. FUUUUUUUUUUUUCk,.

Main problem is that the best fonts (calibri, segoe ui, etc.) aren't free and can only be gotten from MS Office/Vista/7. The browser-supported list of fonts is purely public domain fonts, most of which suck by today's standards.

I don't bother with it, but maybe make a page to try out sIFR

Mike Davidson – sIFR
sIFR

Basically, it uses a combination of flash and javascript to let you put any font on a page, and it's totally selectable and just reads your html. Check out the examples - all the text is the actual HTML.

Wow when I read that I was like oh boy Flash, I bet it has accessibility issues, but then click the link and it covers that in the first sentence, pretty cool Zeste, I might just give it a whirl.

Just embed with CSS. No popups or anything as far as I know.

Most main browsers support it. Chrome and Netscape are the only that don't I believe.

Here's another page with some fonts you can download with a few examples. The guy goes into pretty good detail here and explains how, when, problems with embeded fonts.

So .ttf for all modern browsers, with a conditional call to an .eot for IE?

Quote:
To achieve cross-browser compatibility, one must create some redundant CSS. The overhead isn't much and the gains, of course, are great. Using Microsoft's free WEFT tool (or this easy Online TTF->EOT Converter), one can create a Microsoft proprietary OpenType font file (having an EOT extension). Upload both the EOT and TTF files to your server. Using a single @font-face selector, load the Embedded OpenType font (EOT) for IE6, IE7 and IE8 first then the TrueType Font (TTF) for FireFox 3.5+, Safari (Win & Mac versions) & Opera v10+. BOOM ... you've just served the vast majority of your website visitors.
Cross Browser Font Embedding with the CSS3 @font-face selector

Typekit is a font service in development right now. They basically will host your fonts for you and optimize them for faster download. The current problem right now is that it takes a while for fonts to be downloaded into a browser cache even on a high speed connection so use them sparingly.

Check out this site in safari and see how bad loading fonts can get:

I've got a few invites to the typekit beta if anyone is interested in trying out the service.
