Solaris 10 multi booting

My PC crapped out a few weeks ago. I have a Sun Ultra 24 workstation that I recently got for learning and training purposes (work). I am still a noob however.

This particular model is windows compatible and should be able to run games as good or better than my old PC.

Anyone familiar with Solaris or Unix in particular? I wanted to find out if it is possible to re-size the existing partition so I can install windows XP. I am currently running Solaris 10 on all the hard disk space.

Any feed back will be appreciated, thanks.

You just need GRUB or LILO or something. However if you install Windows *after* any other OS, it will change the Master Boot Record (MBR) of your primary hard drive and remove GRUB/LILO, so only Windows can boot. You need to install Windows first, then Solaris.

I don't know if the installer of Solaris looks for other OS on the system and make a multiboot, though. Most Linux distributions do.

I doubt you could use something like Partition Magic to resize Linux partitions. You could try, but it's a question of whether PM will recognize whatever filesystem is on that drive.

It will. Not to mention, similar tools work just fine on Linux.

I will try in a few weeks. I have found out that you cannot re-size a Solaris (UFS) partition.

I am going to figure out how to enable GRUB, then i'm going to add an additional harddrive to my solaris box and perform a clean install of XP. Hopefully it is as easy as that.

I should have said use ZFS instead of UFS these days. Resizing? No problem!

I got this thing working eventually. Heres what I did:

Popped in a new HD #4

went into BIOS -> disabled the first HD #1 (the 1 with solaris)

restarted

installed XP on new disk #4. tada....

(You cannot install XP on the second disk unless u disable the the first disk)

Not using grub or anything . Just restarting and choosing a disk through the BIOS whenever I want to switch.

I am sure there is a better way but I am not high level enough on Solaris to figure this out in a timely matter. Maybe in the future. thanks
