| Microsoft Server 2008 So I have this job opportunity in the next few months to get into an IT job. I don't have much in the way of formal training, but I'm ridiculously good at figuring out and teaching myself software and troubleshooting computer issues. I talked to the man who runs the department, and he told me that a big plus that would help me is to learn as much as I can about Microsoft Server 2008 before the position opens. I don't think I need a working knowledge of it, and I may not even need that (it's not a very high end tech job, just a simple step up for me), but I'd like to learn as much as i can about server 2008 in about 3 months. Any advice? what should i read? link any books or sites if you have any you recommend reading. I'm up for any and all advice. My plan so far is to just pick up a simple book on it and start reading. |

| What are the limitations of the demo? Normally I get full versions from techtour events like this one. From the last two I attended (free registration), I got free, fully-functional copies of Server 2003 Enterprise (25-user) edition, Visual Studio 2005, and SQL Server 2005. This next one is supposed to be Server 2008, VS 2008, and SQL Server 2008. The wording is a bit vague and can be interpreted to mean demo versions, but that would be a drastic deviation from previous tours. We won't know for sure until the first stop on Feb 27th. Anyway, if you want to "learn" Server 2008, set it up as a Domain Controller, join your PCs running XP Pro or Vista to the domain and play with Active Directory. Make user accounts, set permissions and policies. See if you can restrict a PC desktop to certain applications if the user logs in under one account but allows full access to the domain admin. Then you can try messing with the other stuff: Application Server (IIS), Print Server, Mail Server, Terminal Server, DNS, DHCP, etc. I haven't really worked with most of it, since it has nothing to do with my job. I use my home server for terminal services to surf the web (bypassing filters and saving sessions).

| I don't even remember. I think it just crashed out and I wanted a new one anyway so i bought it. Kindnugs is right though. Step one is for me to get to it and make shit happen. I'll probably have to do stuff like that on the job anyway. |

| You don't have to talk to anyone. You can just be an introvert and you will blend in just fine =) BTW the expiration date for the demos they give you at the events are exactly the same as the ones you can download off Microsoft's site right now, which is June 30, 2008. |
