LTSP

A study-building is being built within walking distance of my local university campus and the people running it don't know anything about computers. I'm no wiz, but I may choose to handle it for them.

I was thinking it might be nice to try edubuntu using LTSP on a single server instead of getting something like 6 full blown independent towers. Anyone have experience with this and if so was it pleasant or painful? Seems like it would be easy to add more stations later if needed. Updating/Monitoring/Managing from a single server sounds great.

Yeah, we set it up in one of the computer labs in my school last year. Ended up saving quite a bit of money and the configuration is significantly easier. How big of an installation are you talking about? We had about 35 thin clients spread out across 2 servers (each with 2 dual core opterons and 4GB of RAM at the time). One _could_ handle all of the clients at once, it just wasn't fun. If you're just talking about 6 clients it shouldn't be too bad at all, but expect some rough patches at the beginning and as people try harder to find ways to break things. It was my first experience setting up anything close to that, so finding out some of the gotchas with ulimits and such kind of sucked. If you don't know a whole lot about administering linux servers (which I didn't) it's a decent way to start. If you've got any questions go ahead and ask.
