| Disk Defrag vs Disk Optimization I didn't realize these were two different terms. Could someone explain the difference between the two and/or suggest reliable software programs that perform these tasks? |

| I prefer the format c: and d:. Seriously though I reformat and start from scratch once a year. I never run defrag on my file drives though, dont think i need to either.

| Not all areas of the disk can be read from at the same speed. Some areas are faster than others. Disk Optimization is when you move the important/most used programs to the faster areas of this disk, and move non important/rarely used files to the slow areas. |

+5 Internets | Center of disk surface = faster reads. Putting files that are accessed most often in the center speeds up disk access on average. Files that are rarely accessed should be on the outer edges of the disk surface. |

| Sequential Data transfer is faster on the outer tracks however seek time is a lot more important as far as performance goes. Placing frequently accessed data in the center of the disk means on average the head has to move a maximum of 1/2 the distance to find a track. |
