| Linux or Mircosoft hosting? I want to get a web hosting service but I'm not sure to go with either Linux or Mircrosoft? Does it make a difference which one I choose?

| You might as well post a "should I buy a Mac or PC" or a "Should I play Vanguard or WoW". You will get people on both sides stating why the other side sucks ass and never really get an answer to your question. Just like this post ![]() But I will say this... There are postives and negatives to both, but you prolly can find more info and more support for basic setups with Windows. It will probably be easier to learn as a beginner.

| Honestly -- It doesn't matter unless you're doing a large project. If you are, then you'd just have to read and see which one fits what you're doing better. I've always went with Linux hosting, but thats just a personal preference. |

| If you plan to learn/use PHP, go with Unix. ASP.NET, go with Windows. If you're just using it for ftp/email/basic HTML, pick whatever's cheapest (usually Unix). Generally speaking there's a lot more stuff you can dl and use for free with linux hosting, whereas MS hosting is more suited to people who want to program the whole site themselves. There are message boards and things like dotnetNuke for ASP.NET, but the selection is much more limited. I have 1&1 Business Package even though I program in .NET exclusively because I don't care about doing it on my website. Windows/Linux is the same price now, but when I signed up Linux was cheaper. Out of the box it's a piece of shit... so much configuration, etc has to be done before it feels remotely usable.

| Yea, I agree there. I looked at it a year ago and was not impressed. They send me an email every month or so, but I haven't seen anything that would get me to check it out again. Compared to phpNuke it isn't bad, but there are now vastly better options than phpNuke for linux hosts. |

+38 Internets | If you go Linux, look for a webhost with CPanel, and make sure you are getting shell access. Shell access is money.

| 1&1 doesn't use cPanel, but it's not bad to get around in. Shell access is included in the Linux Business package (and the main reason I got that instead of just the Home one since I never come close to using the monthly quotas). Slightly off-topic question, maybe you'd know the answer Req -- do you think a host will care if I upload ~150GB of MP3s as long as I'm not exceeding any quota or doing any illegal file sharing? (I just want to use the space as an offsite backup) |

| Web Hosting by DreamHost Web Hosting: Web Sites, Domain Registration, WordPress, Ruby on Rails, all on Debian Linux! I love them and they've been my host for 2+ years, never had an issue with them. |

| I have never had any issues doing this with any of my hosts. Ipower, Netfirms, and a couple others I can't recall off-hand...
