Question about "go to first new post link"

I get that on one machine here at my house when I log in. (WIn2003 running FF, current version) but not on another (WinXP running same version of firefox)

I can't seem to determine why, is there a mechanism that determines if you get a "go to first new post" link in the subject line or not? It's bolding the ones with new posts in them, just not giving me the option to jump to last post.

I looked in the FAQ and tried search. Search promptly told me that the words go, to, first, and new were all too short or common to use in a search.

Or just point to where I should have posted this, or where I should have found the answer and i'll toddle off on my merry little way.
