RSS feeds and new posts

I use a RSS feed -- http://www.fohguild.org/forums/exter...=11,51,38,8,52 -- in place of a standard bookmark in Firefox, but there's one thing that bugs me. When I open a post that has 20 pages and I stopped reading at around page 17 the night before, it's a pain in the ass to get to the spot where I left off. If you come from the main forum, you can just click the grey arrow which appends -new-post at the end of the link and takes you to the spot where you left off.

Is there some way to do this with the feeds as well? It was hard enough to find documentation on the "lastpost=true" flag I use to make sure that only recently posted to threads show up in the feed, and to get the forum numbers on a board with vBSEO installed so I've pretty much exhausted my usual resources for finding this stuff out on my own.

In case that wasn't clear, what I'm saying is that I want the RSS links to take me to:

hxxp://www.fohguild.org/forums/millies-movie-house/25871-hobbitt-new-post.html

instead of:

hxxp://www.fohguild.org/forums/millies-movie-house/25871-hobbitt.html

Should be simple to do, but does not seem to actually be that way.

I'm in the same shoes as you are right now, any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

If I see an interesting topic come across the RSS, I open it in a new tab. If I like the topic and want to see updates, I leave the tab open and refresh it.

Is there a particular reason you close the thread? I leave some threads open for days at a time, until they don't get new posts within 24 hours or they degenerate into typical message board bullshit. Firefox automatically restores sessions if I reboot or End Process due to memory usage.

Occasionally, I check the handy Live Posts/Top Threads Uberguilds box at the top. This allows me to see any old threads that may have gotten revitalized (a la the epic Vanguard thread). If there was a way to "unsubscribe" to uberguilds boards I don't care about (CAFE, PTR, etc), it would be perfect.

Anyway, I agree that RSS has the potential to be a lot more useful. Subscribing to threads and getting emails is 20th century stuff. If I could subscribe to a thread and get an iGoogle full of stuff to read... I don't think it is possible with the current design and/or implementation of RSS.

Because Firefox* is an abomination when it comes to memory management with just the usual 5-8 tabs I have open with only one tab per site. Any more than that and FF starts using more memory than WoW does. If one of those tabs is Armory... forget it.

* - I actually think the problem is with Flash and not FF itself, but the result is the same.

It is a pain. I have to click End Process on Firefox every 2-3 days. I don't know why they can't/don't fix the memory problem. I have seen fragmentation thrown about as an excuse which smells like bullshit to me. Having 1.5GB footprints for 15 web pages is ridiculous.

On the plus side, at least they added Restore Session. So, all may tabs come right back but with a more reasonable (150-200MB) footprint.

edit: I block flash and still have the memory problems. It is almost definitely Firefox.

I want the RSS feed to update every single post made on a forum. Although, it only updates on every new thread made. That way I can keep track of new posts on my blackberry.

That is what the lastpost=true option I mentioned in the first post does.

Use external2.php - VBSEO is rewriting the URLs and there's nothing I can do about it in the php file. I could disable the feature completely but aparently that sorta defeats one of the main purposes of VBSEO -

Quote:
Direct Links to Threads For Guest Visitors?
This option replaces links to "First Unread Post in Thread" with direct links to Threads. Giving direct (not redirected) access for guests and spiders to your thread content.
It also strips the "New-Post" functionality from RSS feeds, enabling the same effect for guests and spiders reaching your board via RSS and RSS2 feeds.

NOTE: This option would reduce functionality for non-members, but could be considered an acceptable tradeoff for SEO.

Nice, just changing it to external2 in my bookmark seems to have solved the problem. Thanks.
