Food and Recipes Forum

Surely I'm not the only person who enjoys cooking on this board. Granted, I'm not particularly good at it, but I try.

Thoughts and comments on a subforum to discuss different recipes and what not?

In my opinion, the Science and Drugs forum has way more merit than this as related threads pop up in general/ss every few days, however food threads are much more rare (the last one I remember is the one about spitting a pig). I'd say try to provoke more discussion relating to the topic in General and see how it goes, but it doesn't seem to be a popular topic here.

Someone could post one and that's probably when the people start to come out of the woodwork. I personally think an 'off topic' area would be nice, and it could include more "real" topics. Things like Science, Drugs, Food & Recipes, Health & Wellness, Animals & Pets, Politics & Religion.

I'd probably put Science and Drugs in their own individual sub-forum. I think as long as the discussions don't break any laws it would be fine. Drug conversations (I guess) should be allowed, but I really wouldn't fancy the idea of seeing people post in detail how to make crack at home, or something like that.

When people post about health concerns, a lot of people seem to pop out and chime in, so I think something like that would also make a great addition. The same thing goes for animals and pets. I don't see it as one topic having more merit than another, it's essentially up to Req, but having an area designated for more 'real life' topics would seem to be something a lot of people would enjoy. Not a lot of people post about food/recipes, but I've shared recipes with a lot of people on this forum and gave plenty of alternate diet suggestions (organic, gluten-free, etc.). We have several cooks in our guild and a two restaurant owners. I'd guess if it were available, people would post in it or at least quietly browse.

Why I said animals and pets, is that I've found a lot of people seem to be huge pet fans and like to talk about their pets or animal breeds, etc. Excluding anything sick (bestiality/porn/whatever), I think people would get into the discussion. Anywho, I'd vote for an off-topic forum with sub-forums mentioned above.

I'd disagree with this just because I think threads posted in those forums would get less attention than posted in General or SS.

I still don't think the MMA Thread has recovered since being moved into the Sports forum.

As for food/recipes... I haven't even seen threads about them, except for hot to spit a pig. If you want to get discussion about it, post threads about it.

This is the sort of thing that I think would work well in a stickied thread in general.

This is one of those ideas that sounds interesting, but is better served as a single thread (or perhaps series of threads; up to you how many you want to make) in the General forum. Try as I might, I really can't see too many people making frequent and regular use of a Cooking forum here -- or at least not enough people that would prefer a Cooking forum to, say, a thread in General about cooking.

That's not to say your idea is without merit, because I think it's interesting. But generally speaking, forums are made because there's a pressing and existing need for them. Their subjects can't be contained in General, or hundreds of people PM admins for them each month, etc. We can't go creating a new forum for every different subtopic someone proposes, but if there's a topic that thousands of people are clamoring for, that's a different story.

I suggest making a cooking thread in General and going from there. On the offchance that your thread becomes insanely popular, or spawns dozens of others like it, then the idea of a Cooking forum might become more realistic. But until that point, it doesn't seem necessary.

The Sports forum that Tuco mentioned a couple posts back is a very good case study in the necessity vs. usage of new forums. Prior to the creation of Sports, sports topics existed mainly in General and, to some extent, in Screenshots. Now that we have a Sports forum, it doesn't get very much use (relatively speaking). Sure, it's got a bunch of threads, and it's got a handful of active posters. But would the threads in Sports being "doing better" in Screenshots or General? Quite possibly, if not probably. Then again, a lot of different threads from various forums would be more popular, post-count-wise, in Screenshots. But obviously some topics need to trade off between sheer posting volume and posting quality, not to mention ease-of-access. I mean, technically speaking, if we condensed every forum into one giant forum, each thread would probably get ten times the number of posts it does now. But it would be impossible to find any given thread, or have convenient access to every thread on a given subject all in one place.

I think now that football season has started and the baseball playoffs approaches the sports forum will start to get a ton of use.

Before there was just hockey and baseball, which are very slow sports. Who even watches hockey?

Too many forums is not a good thing if there aren't enough topics on it that they are becoming a problem in general. Something I can say from experience on TSW. A board needs a lot of posters or you get the "nobody goes there because nobody goes there" phenomenon. Make the cooking threads in general. If they become so numerous that people start complaining about them, then that's a sign that a new forum might be appropriate.

Have you considered changing the Development forum to Dev and Tech? Computer building sticky threads from General could be moved to it, seems like a good amount of people don't read or notice stickies. It could also stop people from posting new comp threads in General, you having to delete the thread, and moving the original post to the sticky.

An all out Computer Geek forum Seems odd to have forum dedicated to solely coding when there's other things, like the techy side of computers that'd fit well in there~

Regardless..

Where's the cooking recipes sticky? :P
