Forum Colors on a Mac

I didn't want to waste space in General for this. I just got a new Mac computer that I am using as my main now, and the colors here are alot different. I am trying to deternine if it's really how they are, or if my monitors color profiles are off.

I used to think the site was black on very dark black, so you could highlight and see spoilers and such.

Now, the color isn't dark black, but like a chocolate red/brown. Is this how it really should look?

I am gonna test some spoiler text here. black text.

Yeah, I can plainly see the black text on the brownish background.

Anyways, im not complaining, just trying to see if it's just me. I know Macs can render color and hex a little different than a PC.

It's the same in Firefox and safari, too.

It's not like that on my Macbook Pro.
Not sure how to fix your problem, just letting you know it's probably not guaranteed to be a Mac issue. Maybe just your color settings.

Sounds like your brightness is too high, but yes, the board is really dark red/brown and not black. The color number is #120800, and people have always been able to read color=black spoiler text on some CRTs. I've never seen a LCD that could though, so you probably need to do some calibration.

the hex I am getting from a screenshot pasted into photoshop is #170700

go figure. It's not even a big deal, other than my brain is FORCING my eyes to think that the dark brown is black, so the site sorta jumps out at me like a optical illusion because my brain swears that that color is black.

macs, what can you do.

A weird thing that happens to me is that I see the exact same thing on the same computer, only sometimes. Most of the time it's black, but sometimes when I load the site it has the dark brownish tint to it.

Play EQ1 still by any chance?

One thing that annoyed the hell out of me back when I played was EQ would automatically up the brightness of my monitor when it was running, so when I viewed sites like FoH they were washed out. Could be something like that going on.

I toned down my LCD's brightness a bit, and now it's better. It's probably a color profile deal with the Mac OS. Someday I'll properly calibrate the colors and such and I bet that will do it. But now, it's so close I can hardly tell.

I am no tech expert at all, but I can assure you it's not a Mac-only issue. It's a monitor setting or possibly video card issue. I use PCs, and some of them experience similar problems to the one you're experiencing. It's not as though you can read spoiler text plainly; you still have to kind of squint your eyes and get up close to read it. But you can read it, unhighlighted, if you're so inclined.

Now that is weird. Is it #120800 if you use Colorzilla's (I assume you have that extension installed since you're a web developer, if not it's easy to get) eyedropper rather than taking a screenshot?

I tried viewing the page with my useragent switched to Firefox (OSX) and Safari, and other than some layout changes in Safari everything was exactly the same.

It's probably the screen setup. I just looked at the page with 3 different LCD screens. With one I can clearly see the black text, on another one I have to try looking pretty hard to see the text and on the third one I can't see it at all. None of the screens are setup badly either. All have pretty good settings and nothing unusual.

lol I calibrated my monitors with OSX's built in wizard and now it looks exactly like it did on the PC. Which is probably better since 98% of the people who view the sites I build are on PC's.

Shame on me for not taking monitor and color calibration seriously

Coming from an IT major whose done contract work at places that do graphic design: Yes, shame on you.

Atleast you're smart enough not to bitch that the IT guy cause the printer prints a different shade of red than the monitor shows...Fuck graphic design guys.
