Move to Texas/Arizona/California where you can get hired as an ESL teacher (I mean seriously, you became an ESL teacher in Ohio? There's like 200,000 Hispanics out of a population of 11 milion.)

Your view on this country will probably change dramatically once you get out of the shit hole that is Ohio, anyways.

Well, Hispanics aren't the only ones in Ohio though; Columbus has a huge immigrant population of Africans, Russians, etc. Yeah, we do have a few migrant workers, but hey, it was "in demand" when I started my education, it was just that no one could predict that the job market would contract as hard as it did. (Well, I mean, some did, but who'd have believed them then, right?)

The intent behind this thread was twofold: to show a few key people that I can, indeed, contribute and be responsible and to also find out if people really know "what comes next" in life. I havent heard an answer I like yet, or anything that piques my interest, so we'll see what's up I guess.

The "American Dream" is that anybody can better themselves and reach their life goals through hard work and good skills. If you want to teach children to be the leaders of tomorrow, you can get a degree and do just that. If you want to make a lot of money, it is possible. If you want to teach for a lot of money... too bad?

Anyway, I don't see how you can expect a computer game forum to tell you what your goals are in life and "what comes next". That extra $300/mo is absolutely useless if you don't have a plan for what to do with it. The general advice is that you need to make some consideration for rough times when you don't have enough income to meet your expenses (including retirement). But there is also nothing wrong with using it for a one-way ticket to China or whatever gets you one-step closer to your goal.

In the past few months didn't you post that your plan was to abandon your rather large debt by moving to China? I'm confused how that plan got changed by your 'hard work' when your income is only 8.75 an hour 40 hours a week.

No, my plan was never to abandon it, just that it was one of my options. I went on to make it a point that I was going to attempt to pay it off by working multiple jobs and doing odds and ends; and it worked. I'm debt free.

Grobb, you are all over the place though, the minute I think you are looking for honest answers you start trying to turn this into why every government is better than the US thread.

I have said, as have others repeatedly (or typed rather), what are your goals. Moving to China? Save some money so that you have a smooth transition to China, and some padding just in case things dont go as planned. Because sometimes they dont.

Like Phelps said, I have no idea what your goals in life are. Mine are my family, I want grandchildren, I want to help my family live a better life than I did etc. So my money goals are basically for that purpose. Thats why I invest in Roths, 401ks, 529s etc and stay debt free outside of car and house.

What are your goals? We can probably give you a better answer after you give us at least that.

Seriously, I'm at a loss. The idea of savings, aside from being able to retire, is to protect you from unforeseen events. Start to hate your job? If you have sufficient savings, you can tell your boss to fuck off and quit. Might take you a few months to find a new job, but you can afford to take your time. It means you can take off time and travel to another country (just don't go through Europe in a week... spend time in one place). Have fun, see the world, experience other cultures.

There's no way you can't think of something you'd like to do, but can't currently afford to do. Saving up means you get to do it, simple as that. Keep a stash for emergencies, make regular contributions to retirement/college savings and use the rest for smaller and larger luxuries.
