401k Recommendations in this economy

Currently, I'm sitting 75 stock/25 bond (with 25% of stock in international), and doing ok (Only had a loss of 4% this year so far), but would like to beat the market and actually do even at least.

What are others doing? Curious.

Railroads have done great over the last 20 years.. Their costs are low and technology continues to push costs lower.

Check out BMI.

Some family and friends I've talked to have had some problems. I've heard some professors say they are pushing back retirement.

I just happened to convert to cash to invest in something else. I ended up not investing in what I wanted to. I planned on re-entering in equites, but since then, the market has dropped 30%, and I look like a genius. I am not a big fan of market timing, but if the bank runs don't stop, the market could drop another 30%.

Every businessperson I talk to talks about how banks have stopped lending to them. Small businesses employ more people than everyone. Some business owners, when faced with a lack of capital, are going to have to start laying off people.

So when some people "exit the market" they're dumb, but you "convert to cash to reinvest" you're a genius? That's awesome.

Learn to read. I exited the market by accident before it dropped. Did you miss the part where I said I sold by not market-timing, but just dumb coincidence? In case it isn't clear to those that can read at a fifth grade level - it had nothing to do with looking at market indicators or personal expertise and everything to do with converting to cash while the market was still even. I didn't time jack-squat.

The ones that are dumb are the ones that sell due to just market noise.
