This is true. DO keep trying to join a corp. The game is a LOT more fun with friends and as a newbie they will be able to help you out, too.
As for PvP, just get into it whenever you feel like, or whenever PvE starts feeling old to you. PvE is sort of the training ground where you can learn the game mechanics and make some money and just chill out.
Consider EVE University. I gather they are pretty popular nowadays.
