If I understand correctly, you're asking when the "rift" between the two sides got so large and vicious that the two sides couldn't even stand to look at each other, much less talk?
If that was the intent of your question, it started when Bush got "elected" the first time (I used quotes for the Democrats), and then just got worse since then. The vitriol and animosity grew at an exponential rate the second time Bush got "elected" and the Dems about lost their collective minds.
To this day, some Dems refuse to believe that Bush was ever the actual President.
I think at this point, Bush could cure cancer in his spare time and charge $3 per dose, and Democrats would complain that he was gouging the consumer.
