| I'm not sure why some of you are concentrating so much on the tracking aspect. I can see a point where such a chip would be necessary to function in a society. There wouldn't be any such thing as cash. If you want to be allowed to do anything...doctor visit, public transit, buy food, etc...then it would not be possible without the chip.
That's just the public part of it. Technology will get better. There may come a point when a tiny chip can not only record things, but pass them along the next time you use it or even when you don't use it. It could monitor your body. The government could know how many times you have sex, if you aren't eating healthy, etc...there are plenty of possibilities. The step after that is thought and emotion control. I know it seems silly now, but picture yourself in the future. We will have technology that doesn't currently exist. Imagine the government knowing when you have sexual thoughts about someone who isn't your wife. Imagine there being a law that forbids such a thing. Imagine all of a sudden not being able to travel, see doctors, buy things, or whatever else because they detected your "impure thought". After all, they want to protect the sanctity of marriage.
Maybe that's crazy, but apply to other examples. What if your boss pisses you off and you fantasize about choking him? Gratz on being arrested for a thought crime. etc...
If you keep shrugging off privacy and individual rights you eventually won't have any left. In a perfect world none of these things would matter. But the world isn't perfect. Someone will abuse it. That will end up being parts of the government and criminals. Not that those two things are necessarily different.
That's not what's fucked up, though. If these kind of things happen people will get used to them. Go far enough into the future and people will perfectly accept the governments ability to control emotion, thoughts, and whatever else they damn well feel like. They'll not only accept it, but support it. This is the future though. You don't have to give a care unless you have kids. The future comes fast sometimes tho.
