When you get to some planets, you have the chance to "survey" and find the occasional item... I've found some rare material, but is this used for something? (chances are yes, but I didn't seem to get exp, an item or an update)
Some surveying to be done on planets as well, at least those give exp - but again not sure if there's something beyond that?
Also a note to self: don't explore the galaxy farthest away from where you should go, chances are the enemies in there are tough as hell. Getting swarmed by 10 geth = not fun
