What level are you? If you're going to go melee, you definitely want access to a Warrior subjob. Even if you got MNK to 18 or so, that's ok. You can sub MNK when you level Warrior all the way to 37 for when you max Warrior as your future subjob. The great thing is that no matter what you level, it'll likely have some use somewhere. But MNK is really not typically used unless you mainjob Warrior.
Also if you do pick up the exp ring from your conquest points person, make sure you get the Empress band.
