The reason Seed's plot was as good as it was, was because it was essentially a 21st century retelling of the original Mobile Suit Gundam. The basic plot doesn't really start to even try to diverge till the second half of the series. Ramba Ral from the original series was the inspiration for Andrew Waltfeld for instance. Destiny shared a lot of similarities with Zeta but not to the extent of the first Seed to MSG. Gundam series are supposed share some common elements but what Seed did was kind of ridiculous.

I'm not saying Seed was bad (though Destiny was) though, I think it was just average. A few things bugged me about Seed, Like how Fukuda would bring back characters who so clearly died after he discovered a new use for them. Then also the excessive use of reused animation and flashbacks also really got to me. I won't even get going on Destiny which did all this and more...

So basically, I don't think Gundam 00 will have any problems surpassing Seed in greatness. It is also not like Seed and 00 are actually competing, there should be a new Seed movie in 08 sometime. Gundam 00 is being done by someone who had almost no previous knowledge of Gundam so this series should be able to differentiate itself from the other series easily.

EDIT: The best thing to come out of the Seed universe was the 45 minute ONA, C.E. 73: Stargazer. There was almost more character development than all of Destiny in that one ONA. It was a lot darker than the Seed series, almost had a UC vibe to it. Only bad thing was how short it was, it deserved a few more episodes.
