In all fairness he came very close. If we'd found him a few minutes later he'd be dead, if they hadn't found the bullet during the first exploratory surgery he'd probably be permanently paralyzed, etc., etc., etc., lots of unlikely things happened that kept him alive and able to recover cognition. The joke has been made before though.
