It would be like trying to pvp in WoW in a set of grey gear (not even green) against people in full tier whatever the highest is. It's not a fun experience for people trying to start in an established game.
They limit player Ranks to ensure casual and hardcore players are competing on a level playing field.

Each participant’s Avatar Rank (e.g., Disciple, Adept, Ascendant etc) within Fury will be capped from the start of the Practice Session through the end of the Contest Period, as determined by us in our sole discretion. The caps are the following:

Bloodbath: Rank 4
Vortex: Rank 4
Elimination: Rank 5

A player’s (or clan’s) score in any game is based on their skill rating versus their opponent’s skill rating (or the skill rating of their opponent clan), as determined using Auran’s implementation of the GLlCKO-2 system, or such other system or method as we may in our sole discretion determine. Generally, defeating other individuals or clans will result in a better score than being defeated; defeating another player or clan with a high skill rating will result in a better score than defeating another player or clan with a low skill rating; and losing to a more highly rated player or clan will result in a better score than losing to a player or clan with a lower skill rating.

I think this game is going to be a sleeper hit. It is fun as hell. Think Unreal Tournament with swords, spells, leveling from PvP (win or lose), slight equipment advantage over opponents, no "auto attack", no stupid NPC AI, no wait for LFG, beautiful engine (Unreal 3.0), solo bloodbath free-for-all battles, team battles, team "capture the flag" type battles, no monthly fee but option to have extras for $10/month, dedicated Developer-owned servers (in game Ad supported), fair battles (server pairs players up and fair after the first few levels) and you have a winner.

The depth of the game comes from PvP and knowing what skills to use at what times to counter your opponent. All skills can be made available over time so class can be unimportant. They limit what equipment and skills you can bring into battle so you have to make those choices up front. These guys have thought out of the box and created a winner in my opinion.
