If the pay was actually good, people wouldn't join the military to learn a skill they can use to find a job once they are out of service.
We actually give a good pay to our military and just about everyone who sign do it with a whole carreer in mind. They don't ask if they will be free in 4-6 years but rather if they will retire in 20 or 25 years.
