Well Vorph mentioned specifics about what he liked and what he didn't like and that's pretty much why I stayed away from most the high-school anime, but yeah Saikano is definitely up there. I was really impressed that GONZO stuck with that manga ending too.
That's why I think he'd like
Texhnolyze actually: same pace and weight as Ergo Proxy but a lot more gritty and dystopian. It starts up real slow but hits like a truck when it gets rolling. I'd have to say I actually liked it more than Ergo Proxy.
