Looong time lurker but never posted and well, the Daddy long legs=spider or not/venom of death thing drug me out as I am an Ecologist with severe Entomological leanings and bugs are where it's at. Base of food chain and all once you get past the primary producers (plants).

Sorry that it's a bit off current topic but I have been traveling in the Philippines on honeymoon and well, whatever..

Anyways..

Basically, Dak was completely correct, most everything we refer to as Daddy long legs are also commonly known as Harvestmen and members of the order Opilione or Opiliones.

All arthropods have a three part Thorax (think chest) although in some it is very very inobvious because it has become fused. (dissection microscopes reveal the truth)

In order to differentiate between Opilines and true spiders one must merely look at the thoracic structure of the beastie. True spiders have a distinct differentiation between their thorax and their abdomen whereas the Opilines have fused their thorax (prothorax-mesothorax-metathorax, from front to rear) with their abdominal segment. Spiders as you might notice if you don't just squash them immediately have a distinct separation between their abdomen and their thorax. (btw, slaying spiders willy-nilly says that you LOVE roaches/crickets/flies as house companions by the hundreds..) I.E. O-O for the main parts of their bodies instead of just O (a dissecting microscope will fully illustrate what I speak of.

There are spiders whom some refer (in certain geographical areas) to as Daddy long legs but they are true spiders and a close look will discern said fact. O-O. These long-legged spiders are in the family Pholcidae. Because these arachnids are spiders, they have 2 body basic body parts (fused thorax and abdomen), have 8 eyes most often clumped together in the front of the body, the abdomen shows no evidence of segmentation, have 8 legs all attached to the front most body part (the cephalothorax) and make webs out of silk unlike Opilones which make no silk. The difference between the two families (Opilones and Arachnidae) is basically ALL about the fusing of the thorax with the abdomen but it is an urban legend that "true" Daddy long legs are the most venomous creatures around as Opilones do not have venom (according to Wiki which I am quoting while on drugs so...) Again, First time post and I am sure I am wildly Fracking up the links but I don't actually care as if you care then you shall use your brains and figure it out. I have the ability to get wildly/insanely/ludicrously more technical about the arthropods if you insist but to make a short story long, Dak was correct I say again.

Oh and yes, they are FUCKING CREEPY when they congregate like that but PLEASE don't kill them as it is a mating swarm and the end result will be hundreds of pounds/kilos less of things that actually matter like roaches and whatnot.

I'll throw this out as well as it is one of my pet peeves, if you kill ANY predator whether it be a snake/wasp/spider/bat/tiger/etc what you are really saying is that you want rats/mice to eat your grains, caterpillars to munch your plants, mosquitos to eat YOU and for your deer/etc to multiply to the point that all your crops are gone.

Do yourself and all of us a favor and just get over your societally injected disgust of insects.

Mind, some bugs are BAD and should be slain at all times! Obliterate Lice, Fleas, Mosquitoes, and Roaches in your homes. Roaches are sadly damn useful as they eat 20-60% (stat pulled out of ass btw but damn near the truth) of our sewage/garbage but that also makes em a disease carrier so slay them willy nilly when you see them.

Anyways, what I really want to know is whether any of you have any good Jeg-Lag remedies..

Got back from the Philippines late on the 24th (39 hour 24th of July good fun), passed out at a "regular time"; 2 am; but the next day slept till 3:30 pm and it is now 8:00 AM and I am going and going and going and.. Thinking about (and acting upon said thoughts) doing white powder to stay awake until it is time to go to SLEEP and then take drugs to make that happen but any better ideas?!~
